Thank you, Rhea, for that link. It's one of the better pieces I've read about the whole business of shamefully cheap content farm writing.

I've had some personal experience with this whole she-bang. I wrote three or four articles for a place called "Textbroker" -- for which I made something like $6, or about half what the "hack" writers of 1930s-'40s pulp fiction magazines would earn.

I belonged for awhile to a membership site where the primary method taught for making money online consists of building content farms carefully targeted at narrow niches. Many of the people on that site discovered the availability of really (and I mean REALLY) cheap Filipino writers. They would hire these folks to crank out 1,000-10,000 words per day targeted on researched keywords, then often hire others to post that content on their WP installs.

Several such folks were making good, steady money -- cranking out exactly the sort of obscure, useless info this NY Times opinion piece talks about.

Ultimately, I guess, you get what you pay for.

    Thanks for sharing, Rhea.

One of the biggest challenges I have found in affiliate marketing is developing a website "voice". You can hire programmers to do all sorts of clever stuff, but I've always felt it was more important to attract readers.. not just random traffic.

I think people turn to these writing sweatshops for an easy fix.. and yes, you get what you pay for.

Writing doesn't always come easy to me either... I just finished an 8-week course on creative food writing for my next project!

"Google’s War on Nonsense" makes me laugh.

I'm sorry, but it's Google who is presenting the 'nonsense'.

Hence, Google is at war with itself.

VS beats me to it lol.

Google is so full of themselves that they believe their own BS. Kinda like a charismatic cult.

The link wasn't a google-written piece.. it was supporting attempts to clean up the search results, and push down those pages generated by content spinners.

The main focus was on the "nonsense" that is being churned out by content farms.

It's nice to see this issue get more mainstream publicity..

You betcha, the absolute garbage in the serps lately has been pathetic. The improvement is indeed noticeable.

it was to finally happen with all those scraped, poorly spun articles websites. and yes, google do have problems figuring out the good content sites, but that is more imperfection of the technology rather than a deliberate effort to penalize someone

    Thumbs up
I thought it was a well written article, and passed it on. Here's hoping that lots of quality content written by true authorities gets a boost in SERPs..
