Borders to Liquidate, Out of Business
Lots of talk about booksellers in recent weeks, and this was not unexpected:

Borders just announced efforts to sell out have failed, that total liquidation is to start this week, all stores to close and 10,000 employees to be laid off.

When I was kid, I loved the fabulous old 2-story Pickwicke Bookstore in Hollywood - by far the largest book store I had ever seen. In the early to mid 1970s, I discovered the 5-story Borders store at Union Square in San Francisco, which fascinated me. No trip to SF was ever complete without a stop there. In the next few years, Borders and equally giant Barnes & Noble stores started popping up everywhere and the novelty was gone.

Sorry to see them go. (even though they rejected me when I applied to their affiliate program )

Thought their color nook was going to give Amazon a run for the money too!

Borders is gone. B&N is still standing -- and B&N, I think, is the one with the Nook.

Wow will be sad as it was my kid's favorite hangout to meetup with friends at mall, it was always crowded.

OK -- off topic here, but when I posted my reply above, this thread disappeared from the "Unread Posts" section and I had to scramble around figuring out how to find it.

I know we're trying to give better structure to "unread posts" and "new posts," "new threads," etc., but that threw me off for a minute. Before, when I replied to a thread or someone else replied to a thread, it would go to the top of the "unread posts" screen and I could continue watching it.

    Now I'm confused??

That's what saved them or they likely would have been the one to go belly up, and much sooner. Borders had even discussed buying out B&N. The the nook changed bookseller history.

Close -- but the Kindle was actually what tipped the publishing industry upside down and put the tools for genuine success or failure in the hands of readers and booksellers. The Nook certainly has added a tremendous number of bells and whistles to the picture, i.e., COLOR!

For anyone seriously interested in what's happening in the "real" publishing world, I would recommend a fascinating little read: "The Indie Journey: Secrets to Writing Success," by Scott Nicholson et.al. You can get it as a Kindle ebook at Amazon for $2.99.

And, BTW, if you don't have a Kindle, no problem -- you can download software from Amazon that allows you to read any Kindle ebook on your computer (and I think it's available for smartphones, too.)

Just fascinating what's going on -- and I'm writing my little knuckles to the knobs trying to catch up with all the potential out there.

Apparently they had a buyer who was willing to operate the company and assume over 200 million in liabilities. Maybe the company thinks it can gain more in liquidation.

Sad that 10K plus will be added to the unemployment line.

Has anyone heard from the Borders affiliate program if/when the program will be closed?
