Anyone know the best way to make an affiliate link NOT look like an affiliate link? I'm not talking about the ones you use to mask from parasite redirects.

What I need to do is put a link in email that is not on my site and have it look like a regular link not an affiliate link.

I want to do a link that says XYZ Company and goes to www.XYZ.com without revealing the link is really www.XYZ.com/?ref=my_id. I don't want a url shortening program like tiny Url.

Is there any other way to do this??? Thanks is advance and sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm sure there is know way but thought I'd ask.

what about a link to a page on your site which then refreshes to the affiliate link ?

www.xyz.com/ebay.htm

ebay.htm would hold only a meta refresh tag to your affiliare url

also you could make the refresh page and index page in an appropriately named directory

www.xyz.com/ebay_selling/

with the index.htm containing a meta refersh to your affil url. you could also track this page for a response

We advise DNS masking for our affilaites. We give them our IP address and they create a subdomain on their site (like travel.site.com)
Next, they set the DNS for that subdomain to our IP address. Now they can link in with exactly the same URL- except that they use travel.site.com... instead of travel.ian.com...

Hey Jessica,

We also did that for one affiliate but with this type of linking, we were not able to track from which actual link the affiliate's traffic came from. They all came from the DNS re-direct. If you have a way around this, I would love to learn it.

Thanks in advance!

Good question IAN- that's not a metric we generally run. However, we do have an additional trcking field (similiar to the SID on cj) an affiliate can add adn we attach to any booking made that could be used to label those links by link or page which most of our top affiliates use simply because they are numbers enthusiasts

I see. But they wouldn't be able to distinguish your tracaking code if they used the DNS method you propsoed right? Just trying to figure this thing out.

btw, I would love to buy your domian name. Make me an offer

You know what I went through to get this domain in the first place?

I'm not sure I understand the distinguishing question. You can call me at 469-335-1000 x 4769 until noon tomorrow or 417-829-1323 Thursday or Friday if you want to discuss and I'd be happy to go over what we do

FYI, just noticed this OLD, OLD thread had re-surfaced from March. So wanted to let you guys know I don't do affiliate marketing or compete with my affiliates in any of my programs. I just have some affiliate links for affiliate networks and tracking software that merchants would be interested in. (Just in case anyone wondered.)

Hey Linda,

Not to complicate things, I think my orignal reply to you would work in this case. It's really a simple solution.

Ian,

Your suggestion is pretty much the same way CJ generates links when you want to hide the URLs. It does work very nicely, although I haven't noticed a sizable difference in click throughs between links that are concealed vs. links that aren't. Does your research suggest it's best to conceal the URLs?

This thread has inspired me to have our programming team create a PERL code redirect w/click stats panel to monitor click through success.

Box price will be extremely reasonable w/discount for ABW members.

Users URL's would look like this example below:
http://www.YOUR-DOMAIN.com/cgi-bin/goto.cgi?ID=ABW

The ABW would be a shareasale link.

Hey Andy,

I don't have scientific numbers but from speaking with other affiliates and aff managers, there is suggestion that more tech savvy end users might not click if they see an aff id. Or they will right click and copy shortcut then strip out the aff id before using the url.

Again, there is no hard evidence that I have seen. It's mostly my own view based on conversations with others from the Internet Marketing industry.

It'll be tough with emails but usually people use javascript to disguise the link on the status bar.

<a href="linkshare.com?ebayblahblah?moreblahaffilate" onMouseOver='window.status = "www.ebay.com" ; return true'
onMouseOut='window.status = "" ; return true'>Ebay.com</a>

Is there anything wrong with a simple .htaccess redirect?

i.e. Redirect permanent /private http://www.domain.com/?ref=my_id

Hi John - the .htaccess redirect sounds like the way to go, do you think you could post an example here or send me a PM.

Hi Haiko,

I went to the site that you had mentioned to read about the features that Clickalyzer has to offer. Clickalyzer looks quite good, but I don't like the site that it is promoted on.

When I went to see the features and some of the other parts of the site, I found that the font size was to small and nearly unreadable. I also don't think that it is my computer.

Just incase it's your site, I thought that I would mention that I'm using 800 by 600 resolution using internet explorer.
