Was wondering if smart pages are just a quick way to make a few sales and then end up getting banned from the search engines, or are they legitimate?

SE can ban non-Smart Pages too.
    Why not Smart Page ?

    SE is not smart,
How can SE expected to include good web pages only ?

but when smart pages are TOO smart,
they are no longer smart pages

Anyone care to share any examples of successful smart pages that might be making money?
And also how long have the pages been around?(hopefully without getting into trouble with the SEs)

I'll repeat the question. I'm not a newbie and neither is CrazyGuy.

WTF is a smart page? Somebody is trying to sell you a bill of goods methinks.

A smart page is probably a Smart Zone. Others and myself can be correct description challenged!

    OK

Terminology like that always trips the mental filter. "We'll give you your very own Smart Page as soon as you sign up and soon you'll be making 6 million smackers a month just like Joe C. in Arizona did!"

I'm not sure if this is what bmar means but what I know of the 'Smart Page' follows.

A Smart Page is basically a fancy name for a doorway page which was coined by a software developer to describe his new and improved doorway page. Produced in mass these pages have little or no unique content and often lack any sort of cohesive navagation (just a link to an index or sitemap). Often thousands of pages are produced promoting the same product or service targeting different keywords. The problem therein lies with the 'thousands of pages' where the only distinguishing characteristic is the targeted keyword phrase. No matter how dangerous 'datafeed' driven sites are perceived by some...these 'Smart Pages' in the wrong hands can be far more dangerous IMHO as it allows an unwitting individual to produce hundreds of thousands of clone pages all geared to sell a specific product or service. Imagine a site with a thousand pages about "blue widgets" and the another thousand pages about "red widgets" and another thousand pages about "green widgets"...you get the concept

Think about it though...do you really think a modern day Search Engine isn't going to catch on to a site with ten thousand virtually identical pages?

those are called spam pages.. the software developer obviously didn't want to call it that however.

I have an idea what real smart pages are but won't disclose it here.. google doesn't like it due to some people abusing it. No need to give anyone ideas to do on purpose or think it's a great idea and get themselves banned by SE's.
