    What is Google up to ?
    I am mystified.

    When I am signed into my Google account and I run a search for my site Google shows me in positions 5 and 9 on page 1, then for another site positions 4 and 10

    However, if I log out of Google I am half way down page 2.

    What on earth is going on can someone throw some light on this please.

    the Google is tracking your habits.

    By you searching while logged in the Google is remembering your queries and any clicks you made on those results, thereby they are assuming what you clicked on IS the most relevant search result - for you...

    Convergence is dead on with that reply, I'm pretty sure that your activity gives your site more relevance to people near your location as well. .. so if I visit Florida to see the parents and do a ton of work on my site from there, I'll see a bounce in orders from Florida.. right now it may just be a coincidence.. but there seems to be a pattern

    The amount of tracking Google does on you is quick horrific to be honest, and the sites you have visited often will show in different positions in the search engines, especially if you're signed in, and even more so if you've +1'd it.

    Thanks for the replies, does anyone have a view on which site would give the most accurate indication of a site's Google ranking.

    Thanks

    The Google uses multiple data centers. For the average website, rankings can fluctuate from region to region. That includes being in a different country.

    Only the true powerhouse / household name websites are consistent across regions/data centers...

    Convergence is going to smack me for saying this, but the most reliable data is to have a Google Webmaster Central account, and verify your site. It will show you the average spot you show up in SERP wise.

    <SMACK>

    Kevin is correct though. The Google would know best how it treats your domain...

    I access Google via proxy site (script hosted on my own server), it gives the most accurate results.
