Did anyone else read this article by Shawn Collins? Who are the merchants involved in this?!?!:

The article is saying that there are a whole lot of affiliate
programs out there that are knowingly allowing a site called When.com
to take commissions that you and other affiliates should be earning.

WhenU.com has joined virtually all affiliate programs, and when
somebody downloads their shopping toolbar, they also get a program
called SaveNow.

Later, if a person that has installed WhenU goes to your site and
clicks on a link for Amazon, eBags or another merchant you feature,
they will go to that site. But as soon as they get there, they will
see a pop-up saying to click on it to get a special coupon.

If the person clicks on that pop-up, you just lost the commission and
WhenU got it.

The problem here is that people that signed up for WhenU didn't
realize they were also getting SaveNow, so they may think they are
benefitting your site, when they click through your link, when the
truth is that WhenU is wlatzing in at the last second and taking
credit for the sale.

Since you are working with a number of merchants that feature WhenU
as a super affiliate, you can be sure that this is happening to
you. :-(

If you have WhenU installed, you can see a complete list of who they
are working with (you won't see ClubMom on that list).

I'd encourage you to share this information with anybody you know that
works with affiliate programs. And write to affiliate programs that work
with WhenU - tell them if they work with WhenU, they're not going to be on
your site. Otherwise, WhenU will continue smiling all the way to the bank
with your commissions.

Shawn Collins

** This seems pretty bad.

Funny how we all want this scumware to just die, yet it keeps evolving like a bad flu.

Yeah I saw that same post at Amazon.

What can you do though? Ultimately dropping advertisers who user Scumware isn't going to hurt them much, I guess this requires some sort of legislation on competition grounds.

While in the forum, I read about WhenU.
My question is how does the ordinary shopper find out about this?
I have been looking all over for it but I don't see any ads for it.
Should I be worried or not?

It does keep evolving like the flu and I wonder if this isn't going to be one of those things that's going to get really big and leave the rest of us crying that we missed the boat.

Are we going to miss the boat by not going with the flow?

Is scumware the future and all of us are not going to be a part of it because of our current values?

I'm not a part of it and don't plan to be but it makes me nervous that something is going on and will probably continue but I won't be on that boat.

Will mine be sinking whilst this new thing takes off like crazy?

You can go ahead and deny it but some of the largest corps. are playing their part -- Microsoft -- for one!

I agree legislation is required. But, I do agree that we should drop advertisers who allow or employ these tactics. If no affiliate sites have the merchant links to click through then WhenU nor the merchant can benefit financially. They will be stuck using the same old marketing tools as everyone else.
On the other hand, if everyone goes about their merry way and doesn't make a stand against merchants who allow/use this scumware then the only incentive for them to change their efforts is legislative action.

I seem to remember reading about a script that stops these scumware programs from highjacking your links, can anybody verify this or tell me what the script is? I seem to remember it has to be inserted on every page.

Several months ago when the previous scumware started to cause a stir among site owners, the advertisers really did respond and stopped using eZula et al.

So a list of current scumware advertisers would be very helpful.

If I understood it correctly, CJ is participating in this new scumware by taking its 30% cut from advetisers and affiliates utilizing the predatory software.

Yes that is considered fact and do you or can you think of one good reason they will stop allowing scumware affiliates?

I say there is no reason they would stop. CJ isn't loosing money only we are!

Our war isn't going to end any time soon.

Can we win???

Ha has anyone been over to www.ezula.com lately? Doesn't look to me that scumware is on the way out!

V2.0 now available.

Look at the nice scrollbar with all the great user feedback.

I don't think we are going to win this anytime soon.

Oh but wait a minute here's a statment that admits guilt

Hi! I have posted a whole bunch of stuff about this at the Amazon boards. I am going to post a new message there inviting everyone to jump over here. The problem is that Amazon also has WhenU.com as an affiliate so I am expecting that at some point they are going to shut the discussion down (do they do that?). Anyhow, I will try to post it all here, copies of what I have sent to merchants and what they have sent back....

Got this off of Amazon's BB just now.
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>WhenU is one company that has benefited from downloads bundling. The New York company had been offering contextual ads -- mostly coupons that appear as pop-ups on e-commerce sites -- since 1999. But the idea didn't take off until January, when executives decided to start bundling the ad-serving software with BearShare, a popular Gnutella client, and other free downloads. These hosts carried WhenU.com to critical mass. "We couldn't have generated the numbers we're generating now without co-bundled deals," says CEO Avi Naider. With download partners inducing installs, and because of the demand for new, more aggressive forms of advertising, "we've been able to multiply our user base and revenue by tenfold," he says. More than 3 million people now have the company's SaveNow software on their computer, says Naider.

"Compared to the rest of the market, we're the only company we know of that, in a dying ad market, is showing considerable growth," he says.

This is quite different from the figure on CNET that there had been 8000-odd downloads. 8000-odd downloads at CNET perhaps, and a lot more bundled from other places that I didn't think of.

All I can say is BLEAH!!!
