I was surprised when I saw a letter from Australia in today's mail ... it had no return address, was hand written rather sloppily at that; here in NY we are told to look out for these things since the recent anthrax issues. I said "What the hey" ... and opened it ... WOW it was a clixgalore check!

Now here is the problem ... and an "Alert?"

The check was "signed" in the "memo" field making it obviously useless!

But here is what really got me ... it was check #147  from a Personal account of the General Manager!

    Questions:
    ------------

Do Aussies sign checks on the left hand side? (the memo field in US)

Is it just me but does the "personal check" scare anyone else either?[/list]

It's obvious that clixgalore is small potatoes but that really suprises me.

I'm more concerned about the left-side signature.

The personal check marks them as a definite shoestring operator, but corporate checks can bounce just as high!

    Haiko,

I've just gone & looked at my cheque book, and as I thought, we sign on the right side.
BUT, Aussies do not usually use a memo field, and depending on the bank, some cheques may have two lines (in the case of those which require two signatures.

Let me know the name of the bank & I'll look into it.

IMO, unless the signed line says "memo:" next to it, you will be alright.

I don't know about that personal cheque thing.
The company that owns clixgalore (Interactive Multimedia Software Pty Ltd) was registered with ASIC on 10/03/1995, so they have been around for a while.

Take it to the bank and try cashing it -- you'd be surprised what banks cash. I've had them cash an unsigned check and a check with one of those stamped expiration dates ("Void after 45 days") when it was beyond the expiration.

You may be appalled that they would do it, but...

Cedric, that reminds me--a lot of stuff will go through an ATM that a "real" teller would never pass...

As long as the check is signed on the front, it doesn't matter where it's signed. Sometimes, it's hard to convince a teller of that, though.
