Popular banner sizes and data feed
    Greetings all,

We are now in the process of starting our program.

Regarding banner sizes : I Have found threads here that list popular sizes. If we were to start with the three most popular sizes, what would you suggest?

For data feed - my developer asks is we need RSS or XML? And sorry for being VERY new....but what are data feeds used for? i would assume to push out new items, pricing etc?

    Thanks everyone.

Are you launching through a network? If so, I would suggest having at least one banner in each stock size offered by the network.

Affiliates use datafeeds to tie in their sites more with the products/services that they are promoting. An affiliate should be able to pull data from your feed to put it up on their pages directly. In the datafeed that we offer to our affiliates, we provide them with an XML, RSS and java script feed so that the affiliate can choose whatever is more convenient for them.

The more versatility in creatives and promotional material that you provide, the more flexibility that affiliates have in their promotions.

Agree and you need to follow the network datafeed spec.

    Thank you for the info.

After researching this site, we plan to sign up at shareasale.com
so i will ask them the banner sizes and which are most popular.

will also ask them about the data feed info.

    thanks again for the help.

Why not just do a set of banners in all standard sizes? The little nuts and bolts like this are the very foundation of any affiliate program. When an affiliate signs up for your program, they can't be ready to rock until you are.

    hello,

yes, that would be the medium term target. our thought was to develop more different looks of the 3 or 4 most popular sizes, rather than one look for all sizes.

whichever way we go, we would build out from that base.

I use datafeeds almost exclusively with my merchants. I use it to detect newly released products in my niche and either selectively promote them or auto-generate a post of them. it all goes into a localized database which I can also fully capitalize on.

most datafeeds that I'm aware of are actually in comma delimited format (csv) or tab delimited. RSS/XML isn't well suited for transferring a complete database. a lot of overhead.

RSS is basically just a form of XML anyway.

Shearasale provides you with a data feed format that you fill out yourself with your products information, it's very easy to use in Excel. I don't have that many products so I uploaded my info one by one very easily... I am a newbie myself, but as far as I understand the affilate networks provide you a data feed format to upload several products at once.
