Why Do Some Merchants Ban International Traffic?
Lately I am seeing many merchants blocking international users and just today Zappos also joined the bandwagon. Why don't the merchants understand that the foreign traffic which they get is from their affiliates. I've been using proxy sites to access such stores, but now I feel the need to buying a VPN.
What can be the reason behind this blockage ?

If they are not honoring international commissions they may not want international traffic. I agree that it is narrow minded if the international traffic sells a domestic customer.

According to Tony Hsieh's blog they experienced a cyber attack. That is probably why they are not currently accepting international traffic. Let us hope it is a temporary measure.

A fair few of ones the that don't want international sales simply lump overseas affiliates into the same basket. If you have a static IP you may be able to request they open their site to you on that IP, else VPN is pretty much the only option open to you.

    Cheers

From a merchant's perspective it could be a number of things. For instance, we used to find that a lot of traffic coming through from Malayasia tried to purchase with stolen credit card data. It doesn't have to be more than one out of 20 or so to make it bad (processors do NOT like this, therefore they make it hard on merchants) so we did a lot of screening. Not sure if that is the case anymore, but it was an issue at one point.

The cyber-attack issue is more prevalent for the high volume sites like Zappos simply because they pull a ton of CC#s and data. Has anyone asked them for their reasoning?

Zappos has stated several places that it is just a temporary measure. I am sure they will start allowing international traffic soon
