March 15th, 2012, 01:55 PM #1Amazon.com sales-tax effort revived in LegislatureA House committee Wednesday revived a bill to charge sales tax on Amazon.com purchases, despite the fact that the measure has already failed twice in the Senate this session.
The bill is an attempt to level the playing field between online and brick-and-mortar retailers. Currently, online sales are exempt from the state sales tax, fueling a national debate about tax equity.
Members of the House Commerce Committee said their support of the bill should help intensify efforts at the federal level to change the laws on taxing online sales.
Senate Bill 1170 passed on a 5-3 vote.
Commerce Chairman J.D. Mesnard, R-Chandler, made an appeal to Gov. Jan Brewer to get involved by waiving the $53 million bill the state Department of Revenue sent to Amazon last year. Although the state would charge its 6.6 percent sales-tax rate on future purchases, it would wait until until 2013.
Rep. Rick Gray, R-Sun City, voted "no," saying it's unfair to single out Amazon from other online sellers for taxation.
"People will just go to other (online) retailers," Gray said.
