    Cures for "Banner Blindness"?
What, if anything, do affiliate marketers do to mitigate against Banner Blindness?

As a self-styled "Visual Communication expert" and author, I'm thinking about doing research to see what can be done.

    Thanks All!

We serve very targeted banners and those banners are in specific locations on our pages. Not much more that can be done...

    Less is more..

And as Convergence said, keep it targeted to the page..

It also depends on the page itself - if the content is primarily text, related banners can pop, but among product pages (with photos), banners get lost. It's all about balance.

    Thanks Guyz!

Anyone have banner split test results they'd care to share? If you don't want to reveal your methods, I understand.

We use banners for branding while 80% of sales are made through text links. For promotions we will design special banners and incorporate the coupon code into them so its not crawled. Affiliates use banners in different way and the old days of banner farms are well over.

Thanks Chuck! That 80/20 ratio makes sense to me. It correlates with some of the research mentioned in the Wikipedia and my experience as a web page visitor/searcher, when I ignore images and other rectilinear elements and look for "facts" and "meaning" in just the text.

But for this newbie, could you clarify the difference between "promotions" and "sales" a bit. Do they overlap? I think that other concept, "branding" is one I already do get.

    Cheers!

For branding on eCommerce products i.e. retail products we generally produce a dozen banners to promote the trademark. We include as small as a 88x31 as many deal sites will list a category of deals written as test links with a button banner to the left for branding and color.

For promotions we will have produced about six most common sizes. Those are added to a special promotions zone of banners and affiliate leave that code as we change the banner on our end. Promos can be percent off, free shipping, gift with purchase.
