In case you don't know what algorithm updates are for...
    Very telling article from Wordstream.com:

If you use Google search (and who doesn’t), you may have noticed that sponsored results (pay-per-click, or PPC, ads) have been taking over more and more of the search engine results page.

Here at WordStream, we’ve noticed that too! So we decided to do some research into what impact all of these new, bigger, more prominent and engaging ad formats are having on the average Google searcher. The results are astonishing:

Clicks on paid search listings beat out organic clicks by nearly a 2:1 margin for keywords with high commercial intent in the US.

They're a couple steps short of being Look Smart or GoTo. I wouldn't be surprised to see history repeat itself here - we'll be talking about Google Search like we refer to HotBot in 10 years.

Google isn't the most popular search engine with site owners these days. It's a good idea to work on mastering social media to offset search woes.

I just saw an article where Google's Matt Cutts
says that links are more important than social "signals:"

Cutts does say that in ten years that may change but right now, links are indeed more important.
Because the Google can't do social. It has to rely on doing all the things It doesn't want webmasters to do.

Be a link farm, have too many ads above the fold, too many ads on a page, scrape, copy, regurgitate other people's content, etc.

It should replace Do no evil with Do as I say, not as I do...

Bottom line is where the eyeballs are and where the attention is coming from.
Google has been a primary source for a long time now but people may be turning to other sources other than search to find information/products/entertainment/whatever

So the affiliate has to reach out to other possible sources of traffic and not just rely upon Google.
