    How to entice affiliates
    Hello,
We have been a member of SAS for some time by now. We have on average 5-6 affiliates signing up with us. BUt.... we have a very insignificant amount of sale coming from them.

How to entice affiliates to promote our products. Our items are not expensive - range from $17-$30. Average sale- $40. We offer %10 commissions ( %15, %17, %20 depends on the amount of sales per month). Maybe our commission structure is not attractive, maybe...?

    Please help!

    Hi,

have you read merchant's best practices forum? Do you know how much your main competitors are paying? These two should help answer your questions.

Have you done research on what competitors are offering in the same network?

I've been trying to answer this myself. This is a great site to network on, and I like the other suggestions about at the very least researching competitors.

Also, I suggest really digging into affiliate expectations and complaints they have of other programs (I've come to learn there are many). This will give you the chance to distinguish yourself.

Impressive - take a look at the Merchant Scorecard that Jeremy Palmer developed that Greg Hoffman and I linked to on Affiliate Juice 32

Rate your program against the top 2 competitors and see how you match up. This will give you some guidance on what you need to do to make progress. What is your follow up with affiliates like? Are they actively engaged? What kind of tools do you provide them with? I just want to make sure you think this is a hands off game... if you want to get a lot from your program, it takes a lot of effort developing tools , developing relationships and working with people to optimize their efforts.

That merchant scorecard is an interesting spreadsheet Wade. Is there an equivalent one to score publishers?

I think ultimately you'll have to go at this the individual level and see exactly where the affiliate is at. Some are pros and have monetized their site. Others may need help and are expecting results right away. I think helping and cultivating the relationship by helping the development of their site goes a long way.

Another thing is finding niches, creating new, fresh promotional tools and keeping them informed of program changes/specials are all great ways to keep them interested in your program.

That scorecard is actually very accurate. I'm still waiting for the opportunity to measure my program with this scorecard on Affiliate Juice, as per Greg Hoffman's agreement here: How Do We Measure Up?| Affiliate Marketing

Wade, maybe you can have a little influence?

Hey Government, I think we're retiring the podcast after Greg's session at Affiliate Summit. Surprisingly, we were having a tough time getting merchants to come on the show and let us work through their programs and how they stack up. Greg and I are both pretty busy as well and cutting back a bit on the extracurriculars. I'll check with him though and see if we can get you in on the final show.

Let's talk at Summit as I am happy to put my programs through your review and am sure there are more here as well. Its hard to find trustworthy sources of information these days and you two have great reputations (yes even Greg)!
