Little headway in U.S. Congress for online sales tax
Looks like another year before they will vote on a federal online tax.
Neither the Senate nor House bill was expected to advance before the congressional elections in November, aides said.

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers debated, but found little agreement on Tuesday on a proposal to impose a national standard for letting state governments impose sales tax on online retail sales.
Legislation along these lines has languished for years in the Senate and the House of Representatives, for reasons that were clearly on display at a House committee hearing.

Some U.S. lawmakers said they were skeptical of the legislation because it would amount to a tax increase. Other lawmakers from state and local jurisdictions backed it because it would bring their governments new revenues. Retailers, both online and otherwise, were divided.
Neither the Senate nor House bill was expected to advance before the congressional elections in November, aides said.

It looks like doomsday in California is approaching. No federal legislation and CA's affiliate nexus tax is set to go back into effect >>>> Immediate terminations from all those merchants who did not take us back when the one year stay went into effect.

No Federal Online Tax is being proposed. Everything I've seen is to give the STATES the power to collect online tax. BIG difference.

    I could be missing something...

I watched the whole hearing while it was going on and did a little recap of it for people who don't have 3+ hours to watch it all.

Affiliate Impacting Legislation Before House Judiciary Committee

It was definitely very interesting and my impression was that there were more people for it than against it, but that may just have been wishful thinking.

I've never seen anything on a FEDERAL ONLINE SALES TAX. Which would be where the Feds charge and collect sales tax for online purchases. ONLY proposals for Tax LAWS that would allow States to do so...

The legislation is designed to authorize states to mandate sales tax collection by all retailers if the states participate in the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, or SST, which is an effort under which states are simplifying their sales tax laws to make it easier for retailers to collect sales tax across multiple states. There are 45 states plus the District of Columbia with a state sales tax; in Alaska, sales tax is charge by some cities. More than 20 states currently participate in the SST.
Its a federal law to allow states rights to be changed.

Symantics! Goes along with the argument that its not a tax increase just collecting taxes that are due. Regardless I want this to get resolved and passed ASAP so we can get on with what we are doing. And to kill the tax nexus garbage. I heard a radio article in the car the other day stating that the sales tax that gave the online merchant a price advance has outlived its usefulness. Its not a deciding factor any more in consumer purchases and most don't notice the difference. Can recall what I was listening to.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that.

But then again - I can see your confusion after the Supreme Court called the Obamascare health LAW a TAX...

Make it Crown Royal for me - would love to arm wrestle you. At 6'3" and 275lbs, I may have done some of that in my life.

Oh, 3 cubes in my drink please. Float 'em - don't drown 'em...

I'd pay to see that match.

Convergence, my drink of choice is Scotch (Mortlach and Glenfarclas top the list) but the Carte Blanche is a great drink made with Crown Royal.

I gave up Johnnie Walker Black label when I got married and inherited kids. Now its microbrews and red wines (Cabs, Zinfandel, Syrah).

Single malt scotches, especially the Glens are very tasty. Just a little too high-brow for when I want to sit down and finish a bottle. For company, or public enjoyment, can't go wrong.

Johnnie B is my usual choice when out (single malts in bars >>>>> outrageous prices)

Favorite wines are Shiloh Road Cab, Ravenswood Zin (I've been to their winery in Sonoma, Ca - if you're ever in that part of the world, Chuck, try and get there).

Its my dream vacation to fly into LA, drop the kids at Disneyland, then spend five days in wine country. When we return they have one day to take us on their favorite rides. She's not buying it!

    Ravenswood Zin
That's a personal favorite as well as Seven Deadly Zins!

The Napa Valley is one of the really great places in the world. I've probably been through there 1/2 dozen times. In fact, my daughter was married in St. Helena, in a 150 year old building that use to be a winery and is now the Culinary Institute of America.

Stop or you will make me sob! My wife had her high school reunion in Rapid City SD last weekend and we did four wine tastings. You can only imagine how detached that is from Napa, Sonoma, etc.!

Hey we derailed this thread and if no one is offended we can keep it going?

I shouldn't vote - my internet connection at home is dead (off and on - mostly off - since last Sunday - did I mention how Verizon sucks?) and I'm at Starbucks, but I have to head home now & doubt that the connection will be working yet.
