    how important is the datafeed?
I am wondering in the grand scheme of affiliate programs, how important is the data feed? Should I give the creation of a feed very high priority or can it just be something we eventually get to doing? And how often must such a feed be updated?

Although I don't use datafeed in the sense where programmers
sort through a tremendous amount of code, it still is important to me
because the datafeed is usually where an affiliate network would
obtain the individual product pictures with links and individual products
    are very important to me.

I would say that your attention to creating a datafeed is very important to all affiliates regardless of programing skills

    Very important.

As for updating your feed, that depends on how often your products change. Some rarely need updating while others need updating frequently.

Depends on what kind of a site you want to develop. What is your goal?

the site is already present in the fashion industry and it sells a variety of products of different types of accessories (bags, jewelry, clothing, hats, etc). Obviously the datafeed would be there to give affiliates easy access to the product data. The question is really where (priority-wise) to task the development of a datafeed in the list of tasks for the programmers.

As an affiliate, a well created/maintained datafeed is a must. Merchants that have a good feed get 99% of our attention/marketing efforts...

Looks like I missed that this was in relationship to launching an affiliate program. For the types of products you are selling its key to the program. You can start a launch with banners/text links but should quickly integrate the datafeed. Once that is complete submit it to all third party datafeed tools. Most of the biggest affiliates I know are datafeed affiliates.

I agree with Rhia7 as I use datafeed a great deal for images and their related links

Datafeed is everything to me... I won't join a program without one.

I have an in-house database that is used as the basis for all product recommendations - instead of browsing for product links on the store site (or network), I do my own (internal) search, then it's only a couple of clicks to add the items to the site.

    Yes, you should.

It depends. How often do you update your products info? You don't need to update the feed unless the products information has been updated, such as change of prices, products no longer available...

As a merchant preparing to launch a new affiliate program as well, I've included a datafeed as one of our launch criteria must-haves. It can be a challenge to create initially but as others have mentioned here, serious affiliates may overlook your program altogether without one. Good luck!

For a fashion/apparel site, a datafeed is extremely important as it lets people show off the actual products. I'd make sure you have one when you launch if you can pull it off.

    1. Need a feed!
    2. With GOOD categorization!
    3. Also available via third-party providers such as SellFire and GoldenCAN.

Did I say that it needs to be well categorized?

And you need to updated it every time an inventory or price changes and you need to put UPC codes and Manufacturer and MPN in it.

If you want a presence in price comparison websites, then a detailed and accurate datafeed is required. You will probably want to output your datafeed in a variety of formats, including for Google Shopping, The Find, and whatever affiliate network you are working with. I believe Google Shopping will FORCE you to create a strong datafeed.

You must update your feed with each inventory/price change. Otherwise your website visitors will accuse you of bait-and-switch.
Merchants, any data you provide to Google Shopping should also be in your affiliate network datafeed. More data means more sales!
