I'm sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere but I have looked everywhere and I cannot seem to find an answer . . .
It seems to me that more and more companies are offering a discount for signing up for their mailing list: signup up and get 10% OFF your first order.
Now if the traffic I am sending them is brand new I'm imaging that they visit the site, signup for the mailing list, close the browser window and then check their e-mail for their discount code. The e-mail with the discount has a link back to the site and they click on it and bang! my cookie gets replaced.
Am I correct or I am being paranoid?

I think a fairly large percentage of customers who see this offer while making their first order would be more likely to keep their window open, check their email in another tab or window, and then copy and paste the coupon code into their existing in progress order.

Also, am not aware of any merchant cookies overwriting affiliate cookies - would make it a tad difficult to have an affiliate program...Salty kisses, Sandy toes, and a Pirate's heart...
