The Google is continuing it's recent pattern of overlapping updates. This appears to be only a data refresh and not the Penguin algo update that is supposed to be "jarring and jolting", per Matt Cutts. Suspect that one should hit right before "Black Friday".

This refresh overlapped with the Panda #20 update which overlapped with the EMD update (September 28th). These aren't one day updates, but long rolling updates. Panda #20 came out on September 27th and was expected to run through this past weekend. No word if it's completed.

This Penguin refresh was announced this past friday, October 5th - however, webmaster / SEO forums are reporting that sites were hit on the 4th. Understand this one only took one day.

The Google is doing it's best to keep webmasters off-balance by rolling out these overlapping updates/refreshes.

These updates aren't hitting just affiliates, it appears to be everyone - except those it's supposed to be targeting.

    SERPs are still a mess...

Agreed, the SERPS are terrible, and don't seem to get better. I'm trying to be objective when I say that (which is always difficult given our position). I agree that this was likely just a data refresh. .3% of queries doesn't strike me as jarring OR jolting. My guess is that they are still tweaking the signals used for Penguin which Panda is more mature and largely data refreshes at this point. It should be an interesting holiday shopping season to say the least.

It looks like we may have been slightly affected by this Penguin update with a small but not insignificant drop in traffic but I won't know for sure until more time has passed. This past week, I did notice that several important keywords that we had been penalized for in April/May were just recovering, which was very encouraging. Not sure how it is now with this latest update, but we have been much more careful with our tactics since springtime.

After a traumatic year for my sites, I finally received a small bump in this update.

For webmasters, it's hard to know what you've done "right" (or wrong) with this timing - it took me 6 months to unwind a comedy of errors on my site, and I was expecting to see some kind of recovery (as total errors drop in WMT). The biggest impact for me appears to be Oct 5th Penguin, which may indicate that I moved up only because others were penalized.

Google has raised the bar even higher - all we can do is keep code clean as a whistle, and continue to publish fresh content.

Willem, noticed you showed up today and started posting away on SEO related threads. Didn't bother to make an introduction just jumped in like you are a regular. Are you some SEO guru that has graced our forum with your wisdom? What connection do you have to affiliate marketing or are you here to seek SEO clients?

I will never understand this Google Panda, Penguin, "Poodle", whatever next.

September 30th 3 of my sites disapeared into the ether, with one of them I had a keyword ranking page 1/2 for many months. Traffic on all three fell away to 1 or 2 visitors a day.

A few days ago I searched through 19 Google pages but nothing, and then yesterday it was page 2, and today holy of holies it is page 1.

Is this G apologising for making the initial error and reinstating my site?

Answers please on the reverse side of a Jackson addressed to veryconfusedWelshman.com

    p.s. confused but pleased.

Here’s the list so far, showing when each Penguin update came out, the percentage of English-languages queries it was said to impact:-

    Penguin 1: April 24, 2012 (3.1%)
    Penguin 2: May 26, 2012 (less than 0.1%)
    Penguin 3: Oct. 5, 2012 (0.3%)
