Overall, our advice for publishers continues to be to focus on delivering the best possible user experience on your websites and not to focus on specific algorithm tweaks.
I've been saying that for a long time.

This change is just one of the over 500 improvements we expect to roll out to search this year. As always, please post your feedback and questions in our Webmaster Help forum.
What I take from that is:

1 - Keep focusing on delivering the best possible user experience on your websites and not to focus on specific algorithm tweaks is a good advice.

2 - Worrying about another 500 "G. says jump now, again!"... Hell no!

Just thinking of another 500 more G. hoops, reminds me of the title of the (2003) Jack Nicholson, movie... "Something's Gotta Give"

If the last couple of days is any indication, I might actually be able to salvage my sites...

I'm seeing approx 30% improvement on the main site - not enough to pop the champagne, but it's actually the first positive sign in months. And yes, I actually stopped caring about what I thought Google wanted - clean code and fresh content has been my only focus in the past 3 months.

"Above the fold" is a no brainer - who doesn't get frustrated when you have to scroll below ads to read the text? The worst culprits are some tech support sites, although I haven't checked to see if any were penalized with this update.
