November 3rd, 2012, 08:27 AM #1Google Webmaster Mystery
G tells me there are 13 Crawl errors with one of my sites one of the offending results is www.mysite.com/widget, which goes to a 404. I have scoured every inch of my site and can find no such link although there is a page that has an additional 's' www.mysite.com/widgets, this works as I would expect.
I have spent a long time looking unsuccessfully for this apparent error but found nothing. Is there any tool available to find this erroneous entry if it in fact exists.
I cast doubt on G's findings because it also tells me there is a WP upgrade available for another of my sites, which is totally incorrect as I have the latest version.
Is Webmaster often guilty of inaccuracies?

This might be a redundant question, but when you click on the individual 404 in WMT, does it display anything under the "In Sitemaps" or "Linked From" tabs..?

"linked From" shows more non existant links
I have now completely revamped one of my sites (30 apparent crawl errors) deleting all the existing posts because the purpose of the site has changed and new content has been posted. I am extremely interested in what G will find next time it crawls.
Watch this space.

Just throwing this out there, one of the many irritating things the google bot does is yank things off of the url to see what it can find. So for instance, if you have a page at:
It will try to crawl

I get something similar. Google flags 6 non existent links. I know they don't exist on my site since it is static (built with notepad).
One of the links mentioned by WMT is an existing link without the .html termination. ie. it falls in line with what isellstuff describes above.
The rest are totaly ficticious, consisting of words which appear on my pages/links put together in some rorder or .php endings etc!
No idea where they have come from, same as your site they're not listed as incoming or internal links. I don't think they are real broken links since I am sure that these links have never existed.
In the end I just marked them as solved and will see if they come back.

I will also mark mine "solved" and put them out of my mind.
