    Thanks for the offer

I'm thinking of setting up a blog where I will do free tarot card readings [public on my blog not privately in email]
I'd like to know some reader/user characteristics/preferences that are general and can not be traced to a specific person.

I'm afraid that a survey would scare people away. What about a few questions on a contact form? Do you think that would be feasible?

Prior experience at one point became a nightmare when people were emailing me too much data about themselves. I only want to be involved in an entertainment sort of way and I do not wish to be personally involved with individuals. I found that people would email me with all sorts of information that I do not want. I want some general information that I can work into a reading that is public and free and does not obligate me further.

So the question is blogs and the amount of questions on a content form or a possible survey.
How many questions on a content form or survey turn people off?
Or is there a better way to get a few general characteristics such as : what is your zodiac sign?
Part of the conversion is getting that general [not too personal] info and of course I would be using affiliate text links in the blog.

I meant comment form not content form - sorry about that

And I wrote "reader" for the person reading the blog but I should have written "visitor" -- I'm the reader of the cards

I'd want the person to create a nickname (no real first name/last name)

Before you laugh let me tell you that one of my favorite books is
The Fortune Sellers - William Sherden - Unintended Consequences - Best Laid Plans - Expertise in Management Consulting, Market Forecasting & Market Strategy

    Who can resist the cover?
One of the ideas of the book is to give away the fortunes and sell
    things on the side

There are many forecasting occupations today:
The Fortune Sellers contains in-depth explorations of the seven most prevalent forecasting professions today —meteorology, economics, investments, technology assessment, demography, futurology, and organizational planning.
Why did Krisk leave without saying anything? Was my question too difficult? Was my question off-the-wall?

Your efforts tonight were not stellar

I waited for others to respond first and then when no one took a
bite I asked you a question. You were logged in as I wrote the 1st post
and beyond into the second. You never made a comment and you left abruptly while you had an audience without saying anything

I guess my biggest question is: why did Krisk leave?

Perhaps you haven't given him enough time to respond? There are only a handful left that "live" on this board.

I'm back! Deadlines are a killer!

@Rhia7 The reason I left was I had to finish off a task by today, which I just completed about an hour ago

After I posted I left. I didn't expect people to reply right away. And time management is the only thing that keeps me productive. And my reward for completing my task was social time, aka forums and Facebook.

So if I understand this correctly, you want to gather generic information about your users that will help you provide a reading and you'll share it publicly? Kind of like a column in a paper?

If so, do you know the type of generic questions? EG. Star sign? Birth date? (Name is turned into numerology?)

Also there isn't a hard and fast rule for how many fields start to annoy people. It really is about relevancy. If you start to ask, how many uncles do you have. People feel they are wasting their time. However when they feel its easy and you'll need it to get what they want they'll answer.

If you can post an example publicly could you PM me an example of what you mean and I'll check it out and post a reply here?

    @Kaizen whats the live board?

@convergence, I figured the ones who didn't would just not respond? lol?

    @akagorilla that's correct. Everyday i'm convertin

..and today I'll hang around for 30mins incase anyone replies

@Rhia7 smart about giving up your best information upfront and then selling other services on the side. Going public with others is great too. You'll get search traffic, maybe even referral or shares.

If I was you I would get an idea of who your target customers are. Make a profile of them and as you learn keep adding to it. Then once you have it you'll know who your targeting and know them better than they do. So you can sell to them better

    Welcome Back

You could have said "See ya real soon" like the Mouseketeers on the Mickey Mouse Club TV Show [Britney Spears got her start there]
I thought perhaps the phrase "Tarot Cards" made you squeamish or that you had just lost interest in my question & this forum.

Yes. How's the best way to ask for introductory information?
The contact form? Survey? Tell them to go to The Link Here which connects to a form/survey?

I wouldn't ask for anything that could trace back to a person from data in my computer because I wouldn't want the FBI knocking on my door to see the contents of my computer

I see and not at all! I just need to set expectations Especially if I don't browse the forum all day, no problem. Am learning!

I would include a small lead form on the page. This would give you the INTRO information.

"Get a Personalized reading by ME!"
"Its free all you need to do is answer these questions"
    [Your email]
[Your star sign] (could be a drop down)
[What you're most interested in] (again could be a drop down)
    [Submit button]

Then on the next page you take this information over to the next page and prefill the next form with it. It might have 2 more questions. They should fill out the remaining last 2 questions and answer. This second step is optional, I was thinking maybe you didn't have enough information with the first two questions.

So what type of questions would you need to ask?

Great answer krisk That's what I was looking for.

Here's an old page of mine on my original ISP site
[this page is NOT an affiliate page, I didn't sell anything on this page]
I was explaining a spread technique [there are many] I created:
    pipeline.com/~rhianna/tech.htm

I ask for zodiac sign, age, and gender.
Those above answers do not trace back to a particular person.
I've read in person and all I asked for was the zodiac sign.
No one was so androgynous that I couldn't tell their gender

Questions could vary depending on the type of reading the person wants:
love, money, career, vacation etc... like that.
Sometimes people are thinking of a question and other times they just want
    a general reading.
There are different spreads that vary in the amount of cards used [varies in time too]
and at some point I might offer some people more advanced spreads/readings.

I spend a lot of time thinking of quasi-legal disclaimers
Once a merchant on a network now defunct, Performics [bought by GAN],
wouldn't pay me and accused me of starting my own religion --
    I didn't know I was that good

Another consideration is to keep the fortunetelling stuff in discrete sections.
There was once a merchant on SAS who objected to the word fortunetelling.

I think that Kaizen is referring to a time prior to the popularity
of Facebook and Twitter when members of this forum would
participate 24/7 -- it seems as if new threads and posts were
being created every day around the clock ... now it's a slower
    pace.

    I own 3 domains.

My ISP after many years decided I should use the space as
    a "Start page"
So I'll have to see if I can still use that for pages that I create in
    a site.

There's a story to my original ISP site -- I first developed it for fun
and then I discovered a personal site by a guy in Brisbane, Australia.
We started to create content to entertain each other -- he was the first
to e-mail me. This is back in 1996.
We have kept in touch and are Facebook friends to this day.
So the ISP site is full of nostalgia.

@Rhia7 Thanks! That link doesn't work

If I was you I would split it up into 2 parts. Get what you want first, including their email. (Then you can build a list)

Then on the second page sell them on why they should give you more information. EG. They get a better reading or more specific. Maybe even make it like a control panel where they get to set what they want answered.

I think that is 5 questions right? Email, Zodiac sign, age, gender, their interest. You could try with just their email and zodiac then on the 2nd page have the next 3 fields.

Hmm interesting about the affiliates being a bit weird. Not much you can do, maybe they aren't the right people to sell for

Yes, I try to explain how long I've been on the net
to people on Twitter who accuse me of having
the name Rhianna so that I can pretend to be
    a singer

There was an active participant [named rhianna]
in alt.tarot back in the '90s and I am she

I'm also listed way back in Wayback Machine -- people
might laugh at my site[s] back then but there was a time,
a very long time ago, that I was cutting edge.
