Meeting of the Intl Telecom Union to increase censorship and regulate the Internet!
    I have heard some grumbling about this but have not delved into it and am interested in recommendations from our tenured ABW members;

A closed-door meeting of the worlds governments is starting today. The future of the internet is on the agenda. Some governments want to use this meeting of the International Telecommunication Union to increase censorship and regulate the Internet.

I am concerned, and I am not alone. More than 1,000 organizations from 163 countries have raised concerns about this upcoming closed-door meeting in Dubai. They are joined by hundreds of thousands of Internet users who are standing up for a free and open Internet. These people are in just about every country around the world take a look.

If you agree and support a free and open Internet, join them and raise your voice: google.com/takeaction

Together, we can protect the free and open Internet. Please make your voice heard and spread the word.

    Vint Cerf
    Google
I have never followed Vint and anything coming from Google Corporate raise suspicion.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 3-14 December 2012
The World Conference on International Telecommunications will review the current International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs), which serve as the binding global treaty designed to facilitate international interconnection and interoperability of information and communication services, as well as ensuring their efficiency and widespread public usefulness and availability.
Should we all be signing this to keep the Internet unregulated?

Goog should fear any international control over the space.

So no one answered my question if we here on ABW should sign the Google petition? Is this some frivolous political move and does it threaten our market? Or is this just a bunch of hype?

To be honest, I need to read more about the issue..

Unfortunately, I have an immediate suspicion towards any G initiative, which clouds my judgment. Their properties continue to push boundaries of copyright law, from creating an image database, to scanning books without consent (all in the guise of 'fair use').

You just have to look at their last quarterly results to see what's at stake when ever someone tries to interfere with "their" internet.

I know this may be unrelated to the issue at hand, but I need to review independent sources before making an intelligent decision.

Me to, was hoping some thought leader here already had a jump start on this. I am taking a wait and see on this.

I don't trust info just because one person, company or group would want us to sign a petition or spin the actual information for their own agenda. I always like to hear both sides first. Well I read of the few pages here, some of the info reads like it would be good changes and of things to come for an open world of online and communications.

    FAQs:

    WCIT-12: Background Briefs and FAQs

    Also reading from here http://www.itu.int/en/wcit-12/Docume...und-brief3.pdf

"transformation from circuit-based telecommunication networks to packet-based ones using the Internet protocol (IP): socalled next-generation networks, or NGN. The vertical structure of independent networks is evolving
into a horizontal structure based on IP that can deliver many kinds of content through a single
platform. This has profound implications for the market, regulators, and ultimately the expansion of
    communications to people everywhere.

I don't know what it all does mean and why G and MR Cerf would be opposed to changes in this structure but if I read right it's because it would open up more the world based on a different technologies and not just only based existing Internet Protocal ( IP )

So, sounds like they are looking for change to give the world a more open platform for communications based on new technologies and communications of today and finding ways for it, specially since the world is changing now to instead of mostly being online through TCP IP to being portable with our cell and not dependent on what exists exclusively now using data packets and so forth.

Hopefully someone else can read more of it and what it means and expand here.
