In-store Cash back

I am a newbie here.
I have been looking at how the cashback websites work etc and have managed to get information about cookies, Affiliate Networks etc that play main role in tracking the online sales. However, I am more interested in the In-store transactions for which the cash back is being given in some websites for ex: quidco. Does anyone have any idea how are these instore transactions tracked? Quidco asks its users to register their cards with them and use them while paying in their partner stores. However, how would Quidco know when its users use these cards. There must be some technology or tracking being done at the time of paying in store or the retailer himself must be passing on these details to Quidco.
Any inputs would be highly appreciated.
