    Similar domain name - Problrmatic?
    Hello,

I'm thinking of starting a new blog and have been trying to choose a suitable domain name.

I checked my first choice domain name and it's available BUT there already exists a site in the same niche with the same name minus one letter.

Is this likely to be a problem? Could the site owner reasnobly accuse me of trying to poach their buisness or might google penalise me?

To give you a better idea of what I mean (without giving away the domain)

Say I wanted to create a travel blog called tonystravelguide.com and a site already existed called tonytravelguide.com would this be a problem?

    Thanks

I think it would be more problematic if you were bumping up against a registered trade mark, especially if you were an affiliate of same.

Yeah I agree, but in this case its not a trademark,/ product /famouse persoons name on anything just another blog with a very similar name!

The one character in the middle will cause confusion but there is nothing
    inherently wrong.

    Can you call yourself travelguidetony.com?

I agree with Rhia. Nothing actually wrong with the setup, but her suggestion would eliminate some potential confusion -- and sounds kind of cool, too, I think.

Just my opinion, but, having the potential single letter confusion could work both to your advantage AND to your disadvantage, of course. You might pick up some traffic typing in the domain and trying for his but getting it wrong and ending up at yours. At the same time, some folks trying to type in your domain might type it wrong or remember it wrong and end up getting his site.

Ultimately, your goal would be to make such a worthwhile, memorable site that there's be no ambiguity and both individuals and search engines will find your site and make you into a super star!

Good luck to you whatever you decide!

    Thanks for your comments.

After a bit of thought I've come up with a different domain name that I like just as much and will go with that.
