We are running a specialty site that encourages users to place their bids on eBay through us for a variety of reasons. We know that it is not legal for us to give users specific prizes or money for their bids, but we were wondering where the line is drawn. It is a very tight group of people and they are rather competitive... can we show their "Bid Rankings" by how many bids they have placed through us or in some other way make it a competition? If anybody knows eBay's feelings on this, please let me know.

Masinick, I don't think your case is quite as clear cut as the one from the news.com article, but I think it still will get you booted from ebay's program. You are giving people an incentive to bid that is in no way related to the ebay auction that they are bidding on. I'm sure ebay wouldn't mind you doing that if you weren't in their affiliate program, but since they would be paying you for each bid and registration they probably would not want you doing this.

wow. thats a lot of bids they sent.

I had no idea the rate (for registrations) can go up to $9 based on volume.

Thanks for the opinions everybody. We've removed this feature from our plans because we certainly don't want to lose the eBay revenue stream. I guess we'll have to get bids the old fashioned way: providing a good interface to the products...
