Google Shopping global transition is underway
Just saw this, looks like Google got rid of the free product listings for many countries other than the U.S.
On February 13, Google Shopping results in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil, Australia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic began to transition to a new commercial experience built on Product Listing Ads. If you’re a merchant in one of these countries and you’re currently promoting your products on Google Shopping for free, you’ll need to create a Product Listing Ad campaign to maintain your traffic and presence. You can learn more about this transition in our recent announcement.
Ran a GAN program for a year where the product feeds were selling like crazy. GAN used the affiliate network to test the functionality of the product feeds until they proved themselves then rolled them into the AdWords system. Then you had to pay-to-play, looks like it caught up with the rest of the world.

What I think you meant to say was...

GAN used AFFILIATES to test the functionality.

We're the idiot publishers who did all their heavy lifting.

Actually didn't know if affiliates were using it. The merchant was able to employ their datafeed and get their products into the free listings via their merchant account. It didn't work for all merchants. When I had a direct to merchant program but Target advertised the same product via their merchant feed they would trump my merchants ads. The merchant I had that got a bunch of sales kept that network program open until they shutoff the free product ads. Then we shutdown the program as it didn't produce versus the other program we were running.

OK, fair enough that affiliates weren't using/testing this particular application...

But how did Google learn what makes a successful affiliate...? Collect data via GAN, then implement their own solution to gobble up commission for themselves.

The Google Shopping thinger can be set up as pay per click and/or pay for performance? Or is it a monthly usage fee?
Is the same data feed also used for the remarketing program?

Not sure, hadn't worked with it for about two years. Didn't think the retargeting was using a feed.
