Have you contacted your top merchants and asked for a raise? Would you? What level do you think you should be at for the merchant to consider it?

Depends on how big the merchant is, but If the merchant do not have incentives, or I have surpased the highest incentive, then I usually ask for a special rate or a special incentive related to goals, sometimes I ask for special rates for high volumes before joining.

I got special rates in most cases for high volumes. Best 2 cases: near 3 times over standard (I'm a TOP 1-3 publisher for them). others from 20% to 100%. Some categories have less margins.

Only once, didn't work though ;-( My site is very specific. Anyway, one of my merchants was a perfect fit for my horse site and was getting lots of sales. It had very good placement. Anyway, I had the per centages wrong and I was getting only 5% instead of the 10 or 15% from the other 2 perfect matches. This was in early December, And I was getting 2-5 sales a day from them at the time which is good for my site. So I emailed them and asked for a raise. The said no, so I showed them my stats and told the guy to ask the owner. He said no again, so I moved his placement. No need to drop him, just give him worse space
Here are his stats: can anyone tell the exact date that I deemphasized him. It probably cost him 50 sales that month, my other affiliates sales moved up nicely though :-)

Sorry, I forgot to clarify something...

It does not seem to be a ggod strategy to say "now pay me more for what I have already done"

When starting to grow seriously, write to ask for a raise to keep improving, to triple sales for example...

Or have the competition involved, like ojmoo did, but write merchant to ask for the special rate to return full power to it's program, because standard did not fit your goals, now that they felt loosing against competition, they would want to win that game...

so, have common sense and build strategy, do not go plain, you know.. CJ wire tips for raises are a standard, but you have to go beyond that to success beyond standard
