Lost documents - Need help please
This morning when I went to my folder with all of my documents since 2002 for my affiliate business, it was gone. The last time I used the folder was on Sunday. I have searched throughout my index and can not find anything. I have downloaded several recovery programs with no luck as they are looking for files instead of documents.

I use Windows 7 and all my documents are saved in a .wps format using Microsoft Works. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Yikes!

Some simple questions you probably have already tried:

    1. Have you checked the trash?
    2. Have you looked under documents in your Start to see if you can click on the one you used Sunday?
    3. Have you opened up Word/Microsoft Works and tried to open any of the last used wps docs?
    4. Any folders you don't recognize by name (where your folder is supposed to be) - perhaps it was renamed.

    Ok, try this:

Go to the Folder where the documant were in Windows Explorer (File manager). On the folder "Right Click" "Properties" "Previous Versions" you should now find your files with differnt back dates. Pick the newest backup of your files before you lost them

    Hope this helps!!!

I would attach a screen shot but I have no idea how to do that.

Maybe do the same thing on a higher directory and keep going higher untill you see all of them even if you have to do it on C:\

    c:\folder1\folder2\folder3\docs

If their not their for docs then try folder3 if not their try folder2 if not their try folder if not their try c:\

Have you scanned for virus/malware?? Here is a good site malwarebytes .org

Have you tried this free program yet?

    Restore unsaved Word documents

Did Microsoft Word crash or did you forget to save that important Word document. No problem with Recuva! As it can intelligently rebuild Word documents from their temporary files. Source: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

Hopefully your file didn't get deleted...
If it did, prognosis is not good, because downloading other programs probably over wrote the sectors on the drive where the file did reside.
And if any of it can be recovered now will only be a partial.

I didn't want to post any code to search for the file if you hadn't worked with the dos prompt. Dos is unforgiving if you make a mistake.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Not if you get the portable version:

We also offer a portable version for installing on USB thumb drives. Recuva - Builds
I got some of those programs on a USB, and I have recovered some deleted files that were deleted long time ago from my HD and even after I had downloaded other stuff to my HD, so it may depend on what sector of the HD those deleted files resided.

After spending the day running the program, I was able to recover 2 documents from 2009 and that was it. Everything lost. I have no idea why the folder with the documents disappeared.

    Danny,

Don't know how old your system is, but hard drives start failing anywhere from 3 to 5 years. Some do and some don't.
There is a program called CrystalDiskInfo [grab the free version] will tell you a lot about you hard drive's status. Temp, bad sectors etc.

Backups are a great thing to have and the price of external storage is defo worth it.

I have had two critical hard drives die on the last 25 years. One was a business drive for my department, paid $1000 and got the files retrieved. They were all sequentially numbered so we had to go over 2000 to fine what we needed renamed. The next time was on my laptop which was 5 years old and used for personal and contract work. I didn't have the $1k to retrieve so lost 10 yrs worth of files.
