Opinion: "store" affiliate link in navigation menu ?
Hello there - i received a suggestion that has stimulated my curiosity, but also leaves me with some worries.

so what about (on an authority site) having a "STORE" item in the main navigation menu with various sub-menus (ie "high-end items" "discounted items" women items") that are all affiliate links ?

ideally i'd add a text "these links will lead to our affiliate partner XXXX.com"

but I am afraid of both SEO consequences and user experience.

    what are your thoughts ?

Your affiliate store is selling products related to the authority site? Or is the affiliate store the affiliate program for the authority site?

    Sorry, forgot to clarify.

I have an authority site (publisher) and would link to the affiliate store (merchant) through the main navigation bar.

Nothing wrong with that from our experience. However, it will not show as an authority link.

Can't say for sure if it will affect your other authority links...

I have many affiliates using the same strategy. I think it does help for customer experience, because they don't have to hunt to shop, depending on your topic.

To me, as a consumer, just make sure the items in the store make sense based on the topic, and that it is well designed and makes shopping (and buying!) easy.

Yeah, make sure the page your linking to relates to your content. You could also use GoldenCan or SellFire or another similar tool to set up a storefront on that page that then links to your affiliate offers. Or you could set up a bit of a category storefront where you use product shots of popular categories and send people back to selected merchants or the category pages on the merchant partners site. My affiliates do this all the time.

    Hey thanks all!

A couple of you say their affiliates do the same. Anybody can share an example ?

Interesting idea, but for me, I don't think it would be a positive customer experience.

When I'm clicking on navigation within a site, I expect to stay there.. external links should be clearly marked.

    Just my two cents worth!

It works and no one has muttered a word. Sadly to say we really need to spend more time on this site and have neglected it a bit.

Our nav for this site is in the left column and the majority of the links are clearly marked. We have the top half of the nav for internal content pages (not shown in the image below), then shopping, then "important links" which are a mix.
