    Note from my Hosting Company
There is a sustained internet-wide attack affecting WordPress websites. The wp-login.php is being targeted with brute force attempts for it to be hacked. Our servers are receiving thousands of requests to all the wp-login.php URL's causing issues with the web server.

We have temporarily disabled access to wp-login.php to stop the attack on the server and to protect our customers from the attack.
Received this note from one of my hosting companies this morning......That is after I raised the question of why I could not access my WP sites.

Is this really an across the board problem? Does anyone else know about this?

    Looking for the light......

I did not know about this until now but I have posted on a WP blog (hosted by Hostgator) a short while ago with no problem.

I don't use WordPress, but I get many 404's hits by IP's from the other side of the globe looking for some of these nonexistent directories:

    /wp-admin/
    /wordpress/wp-admin/
    /blog/wp-admin/

and once I get a new IP number, I add it to the IP deny list.

There are plugins like Better WP security which allow you to hide the backend, presumably they will protect from this?

This is the same fix that one of my hosts suggested.

The same host has blocked the administration log-in for all WP sites that are on their system. Sites still work, I can't do any administration which means that eventually my sites will implode.

Looks like I will be shopping for another host.

I never use "admin" as user name and I also use "wordfence" plugin for security.

My other host just keep on going like there was not a problem.

Any feedback on what I have said.?

Is also what happens when you rename wp-login.php. It's always been what I've hated about WP...
