Wink Marketing Research for a Potential Niche
When I read the introduction posts from newbies it seems as if
they don't know how to pick a niche, or if they do, they don't know
how to scale it/tailor it to their sites.

You the webmaster (or if you prefer the title of web developer)/affiliate
must decide on a niche or a "major thrust" to your brand/site.

If you are looking for clothing merchants (as an example), we can tell you which networks carry clothing merchants: just about all the major affiliate networks.
It's your job to pick out the clothing (or Fill in the blank) affiliate program and
to incorporate the products available into your site in a way that will add value
to your site and/or add personality/something special to your site.
You need to keep in mind "How do I create and maintain my site so that
it will stand out from all the rest?"

Do research on web development and also do marketing research.
As an example, here is an article from The Atlantic on spending
    trends of teenagers:

How Teenagers Spend Money - Derek Thompson - The Atlantic

You can find other articles that discuss the spending trends of Generation X, Generation Y, etc...

Be on the lookout and become inspired: that's one way to do it

Since affiliates do not produce the products, affiliates do not have to specialize in one product or product brand.

In terms of creating a brand and expressing it through an affiliate site,
the affiliate should think of a theme and then think of how various products
    could correlate to that theme.

You can read publications such as Adotas and Women's Wear Daily
    http://www.adotas.com/

    http://www.wwd.com/

    Every niche can be researched.
