Critical and Time Sensitive regarding Sales Tax Legislation
The Marketplace Fairness Act - basically the Federal Solution to the online sales tax issue is going through a procedural vote on Monday. It is a critical vote - and myself and the Performance Marketing Association are asking for your help.

If you see your Senator on the list as having voted "Yes" or "Yea" to the following, please contact me ASAP as in today or tomorrow.

This is important for every Affiliate, and our Industry.

    On the Amendment S.Amdt. 656 to S.Amdt. 578 to S.Con.Res. 8 (No short title on file) -- GovTrack.us

You can reach me at brian@shareasale.com.
    Thanks,

Forgive me for my ignorance. It already passed and has been sent to the House. If it passes without being amended it goes to the president. If it is amended in nay way it goes to committee to iron out the differences. Shouldn't we have contacted our Senators prior to the vote.

    Bibby,

The amendment that you see above there was essentially a "symbolic" vote. (Yeah, I didn't realize they did those either... but it carries no actual weight.)

Nothing has passed, nothing has been sent to the House, etc... The bill is still in play and working it's way through the Senate.

Feel free to email me for details if you need them.
    Thanks,

I've already emailed Brian and an explanation was given as to what is needed and why. I won't post that here. I'll leave it up to Brian whether he posts that info here or not.

UPDATE: I see Brian was posting at the same time.

Actually, that would be a big help. There may be Affiliates here who aren't comfortable contacting a Network - which I totally understand and respect.

If you'd rather contact Convergence, I think he just volunteered to help me. Thanks Convergence.

Congress is considering online sales tax legislation that is wrongheaded and unfair, and I am writing to ask for your help in telling Congress "No!" to new sales taxes and burdens for small businesses.

Whether you're a consumer who loves the incredible selection and value that small businesses provide online, or a small-business seller who relies on the Internet for your livelihood, this legislation potentially affects you. For consumers, it means more money out of your pocket when you shop online from your favorite seller or small business shop owner. For small business sellers, it means you would be required to collect sales taxes nationwide from the more than 9,600 tax jurisdictions across the U.S. You also would face the prospect of being audited by out-of-state tax collectors. That's just wrong, and an unnecessary burden on you.

Big national retailers are aggressively lobbying Congress to pass online sales tax legislation to "level the playing field" with Amazon. And, as they compete with big retail, Amazon is advocating for this legislation too, while at the same time they are seeking local tax exemptions across the country to build warehouses. This is a "big retail battle" in which small businesses and consumers have a lot to lose. But eBay is fighting, as we have for more than 15 years, to protect small online businesses and sellers and ensure healthy competition, value, and selection that benefit consumers online.

The solution is simple: if Congress passes online sales tax legislation, we believe small businesses with less than 50 employees or less than $10 million in annual out-of-state sales should be exempt from the burden of collecting sales taxes nationwide. To put that in perspective, Amazon does more than $10 million in sales every 90 minutes. So we believe this is a reasonable exemption to protect small online businesses. That's what we're fighting for, and what big companies such as Amazon are fighting against.

I hope you agree that imposing unnecessary tax burdens on small online businesses is a bad idea. Join us in letting your Members of Congress know they should protect small online businesses, not potentially put them out of business. Click here to make your voice heard. Together, I believe our voices can make a difference.

Interesting that eBay would do this. They were one of the founding members of The Internet Association with Amazon, Google and Facebook. It is kind of hard to tell from their policy platform page where they stand on the Marketplace Fairness Act.

I think we shall start boycott the sponsor companies of this bill. Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Macys are trying to Bury small business owners.

I guess small owner business in states where there no sale taxes find this more ironic

Maybe I'm out to lunch but as an affiliate I thimk that this is a good bill. It prevents states from attempting to kill affiliate business. Some states have killed affiliate businesses when they enacted Nexus legislation and merchants dropped affiliates. This bill would level the playing field for affiliates.

In MN every year some nut job tries to push through Nexus language in other bills. Affiliates always have to be on the lookout and be alerted to trick tactics by Nexus legislation lovers.
