Will 301 redirects compromise affiliate cookies?
We are testing a new product page and are using 301 to redirect to the page.

All our affiliate links have an affiliate parameter added to the end of the store URL that helps us identify affiliate tracking in Site Catalyst; I've been told that using a 301 redirect to the new product page will strip away this parameter - I can live with that, but my bigger concern is whether or not the affiliate cookies will be affected (i.e won't be past on to the the new product page)

I'm checking with the network and our SEO team, but thought, perhaps, someone here has some insight or advice to share -

    Thanks
    Bernard

HI Bernard, good question and haven't seen that one before. Would hope the network could answer that one. Wouldn't rely on the SEO team.

Thanks, Chuck - still waiting to hear back from the network, I'll share the reply once I get it.

I don't know entirely how you have your affiliate system and tracking mechanism setup, but based on what you mentioned: If the pixel that fires the attribution/referral is not on the new product page, I am pretty sure it won't work.

Do you have the ability to test this?

Isn't your affiliate program on Commission Junction? If so, the tracking cookie should be set (on the customer computer) when the referral goes through the CJ system.

Agree, a pixel fires after an order is placed and is not placed on each page by the merchant or the affiliate. The cookie is third party if its CJ.

Thanks for the feedback! Just a quick update: I've been told by all the networks I'm working with that as long as the order confirmation pages don't change, the conversion pixel with work with the 301 redirects -

Nice to see the update Bernard, glad you were able to get an answer. I was just about to say, stripping it out with the 301 wouldn't (shouldn't) affect your CJ cookie (or any other network cookie) but it would likely affect your ability to track a sale as affiliate within Site Catalyst depending how that tracking is set up and whether or not you're tracking/looking at purchase paths, vs. just last click for example (I'd assume so if you're invested in Site Catalyst).

It should not affect it if it is a straight 301. However, unless there is an intermediary intentional script that injects their own cookies / clears any affiliate cookie.
