    Question to Merchants/AMs/OPMs regarding promotions
    Question:

When you, as a merchant/AM/OPM run a sale/promotion and/or offer a coupon AND you establish an end date/time - is that end date/time based on:

    1) Network time zone
    2) Merchant server time zone
    3) Visitor's browser time zone?
    4) Merchant's physical store location?
    5) ______________________?

Normally number 1. But as I have learned with a particular group of blogger affiliates, they ask too many questions like this so with one merchant, it's based on number 2. And we have to spell it out to the minute. But mostly we are worried about affiliates jumping the gun and posting the deal too early.

Seeing all sorts of stop dates/times.

Sometimes the interface will say end date 1 October 2013, but the text will say 30 September 2013.

Sometimes will see end date of 9/22/2013 at 4AM.

Seems to be no rhyme nor reason from merchant to merchant, network to network <sigh>

Would be great if the merchant would just say "ends 9/22/2013 at 4AM Eastern".

Then there would be no doubts...

EDIT: And start dates are very important, too - agreed.

Agree with Greg. Its tough as the links time out based on the network which in the case of CJ is Pacific. Merchant onsite promotion is a factor of the servers time zone which can be different from the merchant location. If its peak season then by all means ask for clarification so you don't over commit at your expense.

Not to forget that start/stop dates for publishers is based on the PUBLISHER's server time - which as to be calculated.

As far as contacting EVERY merchant - can't just wait until peak season, This is an ongoing issue. With those that handle a vast amount of merchants, while logical to contact each and every one, it's not practical...

Would be best if start/stop times are spelled out to include time zones. This would eliminate a great deal of frustration for publishers...

We should be doing that but good point and generally list Eastern Time as the standard.

When we create a coupon for our Business Checks program it is (already) active when it is announced. It automatically dies on the end date - our server time. Realizing that we have customers from all the time zones in the USA, we set the coupon to internally expire one day after the announced end date. That way no one is disappointed.

Our coupons are also active when announced and expire based on server time. Great idea to add a day internally! We will make that a standard practice.

On Affiliate Window, the merchant enters the promo information and includes a start/end date and time, which is based on the merchant's local time zone. Each affiliate sees the start/end date and time based on the affiliate's time zone. So for example, when I see a deal from a merchant in New York which they've ended at midnight, but I'm logged in my test affiliate account from Denver, my end time will be at 10 pm.

Our system also takes expired deals down automatically, so if an affiliate is using our API, they won't be showing expired offers.

One more thing - the merchant has the option of showing the deal to the affiliates at the time it is created, or they can keep it hidden until it is live.

    Question:

How do we change our timezone in AW? Ours shows:

    " Timezone: Europe/London "

    That means nothing, I'm sorry.

    1) Do you mention that on every offer?
    2) Do you mention what time zone?
    3) How are publishers supposed to know that?

    What's to misinterpret here?

    1) Yes on all emails to affiliates I let them know the beginning and end of the promotion
    2) EST = Eastern Standard Time
    3) Refer to 1 and 2.

Can't imagine a more clear way to articulate the end date of a promotion. Day, time, and time zone are all in there.

Bolded is what was important - not that you made some vague statement saying all your promotions end at 11:59 EST. Without an affiliate being notified of such it's worthless as boobs on a boar.

In other words - your one line wonder of a response in this thread " Our promotions always end at 11:59pm EST." - meant nothing...

Received a reply from a merchant who explained their expiration dates as follows:

We are based on EST, but all text links are given a day extra allowance period in the interface so we do not run into the issue of being cut off early based on timezone. For example, the offers below will be live through 11:59PM on 10/20/2013 in each time zone but will be no longer active starting 12:00AM on 10/21.
May have to come up with some fancy coding to start/stop based on user's browser time...

If you were a online shopper and clicked on a coupon or text ad that had expired on a site, would you ever go back to that site again?
