They must be looking for some free publicity, to ridiculous to even think they were serious about the idea.

Why is it ridiculous? Wouldn't customers want their packages as fast as possible?

Can see it happening - GPS coordinates are pretty accurate to be landing these (worst case 20ft) in family's back yard. For tall buildings there would probably be designated landing pods installed.

Here in Colorado we go by the saying:

"Much cooler to see your package blown out of the sky than stolen off your front porch".

Drones are target practice out here in the Wild Wild West...

Just as long as they don't do a commercial deal with Google to use their maps or street view or Google Earth. They could end up anywhere.

I'm wondering how many people will get their shotguns ready to shoot down some free gifts.

On second thought, I may start wishing for some free gifts landing on my driveway next Christmas...

Not happenin' - the liability insurance, alone, would be sky-high.

Could use them to deliver handguns and the order if free if you can open the box and shoot the drone before it gets away.

Or it will become a reality show where armed drones for Amazon, Overstock and eBay shoot at each others as they try to make deliveries. Turns into a video game! Drone Wars

I actually build and fly these as a hobby. Every year we have a contest to see how much beer a quad or octo copter can lift.

You can also setup gps systems, video rigs to do remote manned flying, etc. Watch some of these research video's from a few years ago to see where the technology is: https://www.google.com/search?q=quad...sm=93&ie=UTF-8

This gives me a few ideas to speed up affiliate payments

Have a neighbor caddy-corner from me who is always working on his yard at all hours of the day and night. Last week about 9PM I was out in the garage and heard what sounded like an electric weed whacker - went outside to see green and red lights at the neighbor's house - I thought "damn, he put lights on his weed whacker!"

Then the "weed whacker" went about 25 feet in the air, lol - shot across the street and was all over the place - very smooth.

Found out a couple of days later he was test flying his new quad drone complete with a cam - so cool...

OK going to run with this. I wonder if drones are being used to send contraband across the boarders both state and federal. There was an article in the local paper wondering is Utah will lose some of the skier business to Colorado due to their liberal drug laws. At the same time we are busting tons of cars on the interstate heading East with drugs primarily pot.

Possibly. However, anything emitting a radio signal can be tracked and/or intercepted.

Sure. It was all a marketing ploy to increase business - AND taxes. And it's not DRUG LAWS - just the whacky weed.

Drones were used to bring in cell phones and drugs into a prison recently.

BBC News - Drones used to try to smuggle contraband into jail

Prison guards at the Calhoun state jail spotted a drone hovering over the prison yard and alerted police who began a search of the local area.

Inside a nearby car they found a six-rotor remote-controlled helicopter, between 1lb and 2lb of tobacco and several mobile phones.

Four people were arrested and could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of attempting to smuggle contraband into the prison.

I would contend they were only delivering the internet order purchased on a smuggled cellphone.

"It is a surprise. I've never seen a helicopter," Sheriff Josh Hilton told reporters.
LOL - gotta love good reporting.

Drones, more usually associated with the military, are increasingly being used in civilian life to make small deliveries, from pizzas to vital medicines.
Guess they mean either Canada or the UK as that's not happening in the US...
