Is it possible to use twitter only for affiliate marketing, and if so, how would I go about doing that?

Check Twitter terms as they may prohibit adding affiliate links like Facebook does. Otherwise you will probably need to use a short URL as affiliate links can be long. Most affiliates send the traffic to their landing page so they can monitor it.

And plenty of merchants do not allow direct linking - this would really no different than doing direct ppc ads.

Twitter may be a good touchpoint to meet potential prospects. But you have to take them back to your hub website before you can move them through your Sales Cycle. Of course you still have to create trust and credibility first before they will follow you back.
