Obtaining images for Product Comparison Sites
I am in the process of planning a new product comparison site for a distinct industry.

I am caught in a “chicken before the egg” scenario: I cannot publish a product-focused website without high-res images from the companies I want to feature. At the same time I am predicting that without a published website, I will not be accepted into my desired affiliate programs.

    Here lies the question:
How do I obtain high res images of company logos/products without first belonging to each company’s affiliate program?

Have you tried asking the companies? If a prospective affil asked me for a set of images (or even our feed) prior to going live, we would consider the request.

I guess it depends on your industry...

But you have nothing to lose making the request. You may even make a friend with a company's AM and you can hit the ground running. I wish someone like you asked me for my images -- a personal relationship is always a good thing.

    My $0.02 hope this helps.

Isn't that what a datafeed is all about?

scr said that without an operational site, merchants may not approve their site. And that is a valid concern. Obviously a datafeed would be the goal -- but to be accepted into a program, you gotta start somewhere, yes?

scr could build a prototype, and block it from all search engines, apply to a few merchants and hope for the best -- but I still think personal requests are worth the effort. The absolute worse thing that can happen is the AM says no. In my opinion, there is only upside to trying to build relationships.
