Will California Chrome Win Racing's Triple Crown?
There has not been a Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred racing since Affirmed in 1978, but California born and bred California Chrome has a chance to do it tomorrow. The winner of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, California Chrome is the favorite to win tomorrow's Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown.

    Can he do it?

There will be a field of 11 horses running. If not California Chrome, then who will take the Belmont?

Note, California Chrome is trained by Art Sherman, whose brother Jack Sherman was a good friend of mine many, many years ago.

Still owning a home here in "Preakness City" (Baltimore) I should be able to provide a definitive answer. Just let me defer until sometime tomorrow night.

No Triple Crown as California Chrome finishes in a dead heat for fourth.

Congrats to Tonalist, the winner of the Belmont.

The difference doesn't mean much anymore, but it used to be very significant.

Under the varied systems in use now, in some states, every horse in a race receives a share of the purse, and in NY, or at least for the Belmont, I believe either all 11 horses who raced, or at lease the top eight, all receive a share.

But until a few years ago, only the top four finishers in US thoroughbred races shared in the purse. In a race like the Belmont, a fourth or fifth share is probably somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000. The winner receives close to $1 M.

The division and payout of race purses is much more important on run of the mill everyday races where that third or fourth place purse of $500 or $1000 could mean the horse will get fed until its next race.
