Your BEST Tip for Merchant Affiliate Program Start-Up?
    Hello Affiliate Pros:

    Advice, please.

I had an affiliate program years ago, and then dabbled in it two years ago, and am back again full-time on it.

I will personally manage the program for my company and then turn it over to someone once I know enough to guide them.

My marketing/business experience is rather extensive (I'm just old, not smart), so...

What's the ONE thing you'd advise me to do in setting up my affiliate program?

    Gracias,

    Michael

Realize it's a process to build a strong and balanced program, esp from scratch. It will take some time...

This is an industry built on relationships. Don't just focus on the so-called "super affiliates." Both the big guys and smaller affiliates are important to every program and should be valued for their participation.

Treat it like any other marketing channel. It needs all the same attention/care/investment/time/strategy/buy-in to make it grow. One of the biggest mistakes I see new (and even sometimes established) merchants make is treating it like a direct sales solution vs. a marketing channel. It's not set and forget, it's not turnkey results, it is a business within your business. Invest and reap the rewards of what you sow.

Realize it's a funnel. You need to get people to sign up. You need to get people to get active. You need to motivate those who are active and make sure they have everything they need to succeed. You need to keep the program clean, by policing the affiliates. That's several very different things to focus on. Make sure you devote enough time to EACH. Recruiting. Activation. Motivation. Policing. If you neglect any one, it'll affect all of the others.

When you get affiliate producing traffic shift your focus on optimizing them. Reach out and offer suggestions on what is selling. Let affiliates know what keywords are being searched so they can hone their site copy and reviews.

My most direct competitors don't do affiliate marketing.

In all my experiences, that usually means there's not a market.

I can't believe I'm that much smarter than they are. A little, but not THAT much.

Just playing Devil's Advocate. Make sure there isn't a reason why they aren't in this space.

Yup, I hear ya loud and clear.

Although we're all (in my industry) in technology, traditionally marketing has been just that... very traditional.

So, we'll see, but I'm banking that we'll be touching corners of the market that they don't/can't.

    We'll know pretty soon, though.

    Really appreciate your feedback.

    Michael
