MySQL Collation Changed to Swedish - On it's own - How?
Not one site I have found so far can explain to me how when I got up to get a drink and everything was good, my database took it upon itself to randomly pick several tables and change the collation to Swedish.

no fixes working, of the few I could find.
exporting, dropping table and importing, no go.
Dropping table and manually inserting new data, no go.
Checked default collation settings, everything is good.

probably something simple ... I hope, but f it.
    bed.
    now.

Thank you for allowing my vent.

First, do you have a backup of your working database?

Also, can you retrieve readable data or you are getting question marks and weird characters?

Yes a backup exists but it's a few days old and I have done a LOT of work on it in those few days. I'm holding off on that for now but have that in the back pocket for if I can't get it working right.

The data is completely unreadable, when queried using php, although if I use PHPMyAdmin I can see the data fine in the tables.

    popdawg,

Have you tried manually changing any fields that are text, varchar, blob types to latin1_swedish_ci?
That should make all your text field readable for utf8.

I had tried that last night, both manually changing individual fields and using Convert on the tables.

I have exported the database several times, importing as utf8 and it finally seems to work.
    All my data looks intact.

I just don't understand what would have caused this change in the first place.
I was literally sitting down working on a php simple select query to list categories, which worked, when I went to the kitchen. When I returned I made a css formatting change to the font size, refreshed the list and went WTF.

    Frustrating.

THANK YOU guys and please let me know if you can think of what I could have done or what may have caused this.

When you say "The data is completely unreadable" do you mean it's scrambled or nothing is returned? The second happened to me when after upgrading MySQL to a newer version I got my tables created as innodb (which became the default option in the newer version).
So to avoid all that I simply put
    ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1
in the end of "create table t ("
although later I added it in the .cnf file, but I still keep the line while creating new tables.

    It was garbled symbols mostly.
I've been holding off on upgrading MySQL but as soon as I am done this project I need to really look more into refreshing my MySQL knowledge. Apparently there have been some changes in the last 7 or so years lol

If you're not kidding about 7 years, the worst news will be the config file is empty now, and you have to google a lot to fill it up. Or just forget it lol

    Somewhat kidding
Systems and software are all kept current, but I've been doing and keeping myself in the loop enough to just keep things running. Need to get into the nitty gritty now.
