How to Know the Size of a Linkshare Datafeed?
There seems to be a long wait for a few new datafeeds I have tried to download from Linkshare lately. I waited for 20 minutes and it just hanged with the following message which I think it actually means it's still downloading it

    D:\temp\Datafeeds\MyWebsite>ftp -s:linkshare_merchant_(Merchant Name).txt
    ftp> lcd d:\temp\Datafeeds\MyWebsite
    Local directory now D:\temp\Datafeeds\MyWebsite.
    ftp> open aftp.linksynergy.com
    Connected to aftp.linksynergy.com.
220 Service ready for new user.
    User (aftp.linksynergy.comnone)):
331 User name okay, need password for ME.

    230 User logged in, proceed.
    ftp> type binary
    200 Command TYPE okay.
    ftp> get (NUMBER)_mp.xml.gz
    200 Command PORT okay.
    150 Getting data connection.
I changed a couple of things for privacy reasons but that is most of it

is there a command to just get the size or even better a way to know how much is downloaded so far?

LinkShare is using strange 0 size links that "I think" trigger datafeed generation when you request them. Ha, LinkShare might not know the size of the datafeed files.

I've never been a fan of they way they have this setup. I too want to know the size prior to grabbing them.
Merchants, any data you provide to Google Shopping should also be in your affiliate network datafeed. More data means more sales!

Definitely nicer to know the size of the feed before getting it.

Showing the merchant's name instead of only the merchant ID on the feed list will make my life much easier as well.

I have to say, LS datafeeds are the hardest to deal with compare to other major networks.

I tried to download the Ice.com datafeed but after 40 minutes and nothing happening I gave up.

It definitely is an annoying system they have. I guess the only positive is there is less competition as most people don't know how to get their datafeeds lol. I might write to them and ask why the feeds for my new channel are not downloading. I waited for several days in case it needed time to kick it but that is not the problem obviously. I have other channels where I don't have problems getting the feeds.

If you're after FTP commands, try typing "help" in the command prompt.
    >ftp ftp.funet.fi
    Connected to ftp.funet.fi.
    Password:
    230 Any password will work
    ftp> bi
200 TYPE is now 8-bit binary
    ftp> ha
Hash mark printing On ftp: (2048 bytes/hash mark)
    ftp> ls
    ydl_mysp.zip
    ftp> dir
    -r-------- 1 60002 50027 167840 Nov 20 1994 ydl_mysp.zip

there's your filesize in bytes right before the date.
and that "ha" command will force the client to print hash marks during the downloading process, but it'll fill up the screen with hashes for bigger files, but it's an indicator that something is still being downloaded. "bi" is short for well what you typed.

P.S. Some FTP servers won't report the filesize. My religious belief is that's because the file is created on demand, like some datafeeds out there. But the hashes will be printed regardless.

    P.P.S. Why not wget?

thanks login, I used some of your commands and was able to see the files. The problem is they had no XML file, only a text file so I have now managed to download that and it was only 524kb.
