    They suck.
    Stay away.

They didn't always, but they do now. If, like me until recently, you haven't had any major issues, you will. It's not if ... it's when.

If you have a choice between placing your boy bits in the garbage disposal at a needle disposal factory and using Hostgator, for the love of god use Hostgator and think about the life choices that put you in that situation, but for anything else stay as far away from them as you can.

They and many others have been bought out by the same company.
I found a list of the other hosts under this same umbrella:

Agreed. I used to be a big Hostgator Fan and, in several years, have never had a problem that was not quickly resolved.

However, the new ownership is cutting corners and reducing service levels. The first "problem" I had was in installing Wordpress on a new domain account - THEY DISCONTINUED FANTASTICO AND REPLACED IT WITH SOME CRAP INSTALLER. The Wordpress version that was installed was two years old and DID NOT WORK.

While I could have done a manual install I no longer trust them. I solved the problem by moving the domain to a VPS I have with another Host. Easy peasy. (It won't be quite as easy to move a couple dozen established sites - but that will happen - soon.)

Today one of my two (reseller) accounts was down for about four hours. I'm certainly glad I don't actually resell space to other webmasters.

I'd be happy to PM you the name of a real hosting provider, just let me know. Been with them over a decade.

Maybe my sites are hosted at different server because I didn't notice the down time today.

It sucks to hear so many more negative experience piling up after I finally decided to move some of my sites to Hostgator(they've been top recommended hosting company by many ABWers for years, that finally convinced me to give them a try)

At the beginning of my site transition, I did notice their customer support response time was significantly longer than my other host. Other than that, I haven't experienced any major issues so far.

Maybe I'm lucky, maybe like OP said "you haven't had any major issues, you will. It's not if ... it's when."

    I'm starting to worry...

mayfly, for $hi7s and giggles you may want to take a look at their support forum. Fun place right now

Convergence, I've just signed up with a company but it wouldn't hurt to have a second and split sites up. I had planned on moving to multiple hosts in the new year anyway. Now is as good a time as any.

    PM away and thank you

Hey, Denis. I'm very happy with my "other" company but it looks like I, too, could use another "backup." Your rec, via PM, will be appreciated.

all mysql databases appear to have vanished
Auto backups seem to have been disabled or not working since I moved files to another computer months ago.
    I am not panicking yet.
    It is close though.

37 minutes on hold so far

I'll say this for this company, their support is the best of any of the hosting companies I've been with since I started in the affiliate business.

So what's so secret about this company that you guys can't even mention its name in public? I would think they would like as much publicity as possible.

Few reasons, the main one is:

Don't care for the general hacker phreaks / spammers / bad apples to know things like this - JUST in case there may be a security vulnerability/issue.

I'd be happy to PM you.

    Bill, PM on the way...

Can I get a PM too pls.

I am with a company whose support has been great so far. I always get a response back from their tech support within minutes. But it doesn't take time for things to go sour. One wrong sell out and we have another HostGator in the making.

I talked to Hostgator recently at a conference and mentioned how they were loved at one time by affiliates but scorned now. They said they are doing a lot of consolidation to get things cleaned up. Sucks since they won't win back those they burned.

That's a piece of good information to know. As long as they are aware of the issues and trying to clean up things...

I hate to move sites around because it is time consuming and things don't always go smoothly during transition.
