    Missing Images in Datafeeds
Is there a way that Joe Affiliate can recognize that a missing image has been replaced with the Avantlink generic "Sorry, the image is unavailable" image? This image must be served up by Avantlink magic, because the url looks like a normal merchant image. superCool prefers to handle missing images in his own way - either a custom replacement image, or remove the product from the site. Is there a way to tell when the merchant image is not found?

Also, since Avantlink works hard to improve their datafeeds, wouldn't it be possible to verify the images in the feeds every now and then? You have a feed quality rating - does it include image availability? It doesn't look very good on the affiliate site to see an image of a white box when the customer is expecting a fancy bicycle or a trendy man-purse. Images sell. Is there something you can do to encourage the merchants to keep their images up to date? Or if you can monitor them, maybe even include a column on the datafeed indicating that the image was available as of the last image check.

Please don't think that ole superCool is picking on you. Avantlink is the only network that superCool would even bother asking this question to. There is hope that you might do something about it.

The minimum would be a way for Joe Affiliate to know when the white box image is served. The rest would be great, but affilates know not to expect too much.

    thanks for listening!

Error to both US and Canada Network.
It had been for many many days.

Hi Gary, any further thoughts or progress on this? Will affiliates have a way to know that the merchant image was replaced by the generic image?

    Thanks

I wish they'd go back to the way it use to be, the little no image box jpg's alway had the same name noimage.jpg or something on that order.
Made that product able to be filtered out.
Can't do it that way with the image being the name of the product.

Let me followup on this. As I'm sure you can imagine, Q4 puts quite the strain on our development team so dev requests are noted, but may be a little while until we're able to provide the exact solution.

Supercool, I'd like to know if something like this would work for you (and for everyone who +1'd the comment). If on the datafeed configuration screen we offered an option, say a checkbox, that said "Do not include default AvantLink photo for products with missing images" would that work? Then you could ID products with no values in the image column and automatically replace it with your own solution?

I'm not a developer so I'm not sure how feasible this solution is (for you or for our developers), but if that sounds like an acceptable direction, I'll submit the idea to our dev request list and get the ball rolling if we feel enough people want this change.

Ok, thanks for the quick response Convergence. I'll move forward with submitting the idea to our development queue.

I'm pretty sure there are quite a few solutions for the problem. I know I've fixed missing images ages ago and I don't remember what I've done. I think it was some JavaScript code, which should be easily found online.

Saw the bump- don't worry we haven't forgotten about this, but it is on a very long list of development requests.

Guess that's what happens when you actually try to deliver on the requests made by your users

    Chad,
You should look at some of my last few support tickets.
That will add to your list of improvements I'm sure.

    1. Affiliates need to presell well so a user clicks on a link or an image to go to the merchant site.
    2. If you are preselling a product, can you really do it without a decent product image? Which prospective buyer will look at a 'white cube' for a product image and feel excited to buy it. I won't.
    3. Providing a white cube for missing products was a technical solution around a missing image problem by a software pgmr who knows nothing about marketing. It happens in every industry. IT hardly knows about the business most of the time.

Chad - I'd get this bumped upwards in the production schedule. It's not one merchant - but the entire network that suffers. As an affiliate, we just don't know what we will get from a feed. Wasting time is not an option. Better safe than sorry - what is safe? Not bothering with the network.

Be different and take care of things that are a concern to your affiliates - quickly. For every affiliate that says something, many more do not.

Let us know when it's done, so we can become excited about using the network again...

There is no harm, zero.. zilch .. nada, in excluding those products from a datafeed that don't have an image. I don't want to display them on my site. There is no loss to the affiliates by removing them from a feed.

    Does anyone disagree?

Hey All - I just wanted to let you know changes are on the way. We/AvantLink will be posting more information on what we are doing to correct this issue and the many enhancements we also have planned very soon, so please stay tuned.

We value our partnerships so please keep the feedback coming.

Enhancements are nice. But flagging an empty/missing image field should be a relatively easy fix and is VERY IMPORTANT FOR AFFILIATES who use datafeeds.

Programmers are paid a salary regardless of what they are developing - affiliates live or die by the quality of a datafeed. Therefore, programmers (or their supervisors) do not seem to understand the importance of some (rather dull) features that need fixing...

Hi Bill - We understand your point but as I'm sure you can imagine, we also have affiliates that do NOT want to exclude products that do not include images or have broken images. Our solution or enhancement will allow you to choose this plus many other variables based on what your requirements are.

Stay tuned this will be coming very shortly.
