I would guess that a lot of this has to do with why the account was closed. If the dismissal was for a terms violation, they would argue they don't owe you anything. If you were tossed out for inactivity or some other silly big network reason, you should get with Rakuten Affiliate Network support and ask.

Sounds to me like they terminated you for cause... you're not getting paid because they consider whatever you did to be a violation of terms at the network level.

I got this today after 7 years with Linkshare:

Your affiliate account in the Rakuten LinkShare Network has been terminated under Section 18 of Rakuten LinkShare's Terms and Conditions (Publisher Membership Agreement | Rakuten Marketing). Access to your account has been suspended, and all Rakuten LinkShare links on your site will no longer function effective immediately. If you have any questions, please contact us at compliance@linkshare.com.

    Best regards,
    The Rakuten LinkShare Team
    Affiliate Marketing | Rakuten Marketing

My account was terminated because I refused to answer these questions:

We are contacting you about your Rakuten Marketing Account and would like to know how you are generating traffic to Buy.com, World of watches and Macys. Please respond to the following inquiries regarding your online business activity:

    · How do you drive your traffic for these Network Advertisers?

    · What promotional methods are used to advertise these Network Advertisers?

    · Do you advertise through Paid Search? Please provide examples of keywords and screenshots so that we can evaluate your search ad placements.

    · If you only drive traffic via natural search, can you provide examples of the keywords and screenshots?

    · Do you use Contextual Ad Networks and direct media buys? If so please provide specific information about your relationship with these networks and how they deliver the traffic

    · Do you use Social Networking to promote your affiliate links? If so please provide links, so we can evaluate it.

    · Do you use Email Campaigns?

o How do you build your email list of subscribers?

o Can you please provide me with a link where I can subscribe to your email list, so I can see your newsletters?

o In addition, can you please provide me with 2 – 3 examples of email newsletters you have sent out, so I can review them?

    · Do you use software to promote your affiliate links? If so, please provide detailed information about the software and method of distribution. Please provide links where we can download adware for testing.

Also please provide description of any online channels or activities you undertake to promote LinkShare Advertiser Partners which would allow us to evaluate how you are generating referral traffic. If there is any other information about you or your business that would help us evaluate your account please let us know.

We would like to hear from you regarding the above by November 7th. Please note that if we don’t hear from you by the date, we may hold current or pending commission payout(s). Thank you for your attention.

    Sincerely,

    Regina Cotto

See #9, you have to play the game to get paid.

Why would you refuse to respond to the network?

That's easy. Can you imagine if someone asked you to just send all that information about your business? That other company would easily use all that information for their own benefit by implementing everything you send them.

You can share instances of what you do without giving away your entire playbook. At least have a dialogue with the network and discuss the situation.

Networks ask these types of questions.
They are general and can lead to more specific but an affiliate can answer without revealing the special secret sauce recipe.
I've seen these types of questions from other networks.
Here's how I would answer. Saving this.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>I guess you could call my sites examples of basic content marketing.
I use links especially product links offered by the network (in this case Linkshare).
I am active on Twitter and generate general good will there.
I do not use commercial links on Twitter but direct readers to websites/pages of interest.
Here you can talk about a site/blog combo etc...

    · What promotional methods are used to advertise these Network Advertisers?

    >>>>> I use content and organic methods to be found through organic search.

    · Do you advertise through Paid Search? Please provide examples of keywords and screenshots so that we can evaluate your search ad placements.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> No.

    · If you only drive traffic via natural search, can you provide examples of the keywords and screenshots?

    >>>>>>> Never been asked this question. I guess a screenshot of a search engine result page is what they are looking for?
I'd send them a link to an article about the diminished relevance of keywords and ask them to clarify their question[s] for further discussion.

    · Do you use Contextual Ad Networks and direct media buys? If so please provide specific information about your relationship with these networks and how they deliver the traffic

    >>>>>>> I use the product links they provide

    · Do you use Social Networking to promote your affiliate links? If so please provide links, so we can evaluate it.

    >>>>> I would use social networking only to create interest for a specific web page. I wouldn't bother putting a commercial link on lets say Twitter.

    · Do you use Email Campaigns?

    >>>>>>>>>> No

o How do you build your email list of subscribers?

o Can you please provide me with a link where I can subscribe to your email list, so I can see your newsletters?

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>> No
This is a general way I would answer.
More clarification would be between me and the network.

While I understand that networks need to police against unethical affiliates*, I do really hate the "guilty until proven innocent" methods they seem to employ.
    ___
*I wish they would do the same against unethical merchants. From what I've seen, that very rarely happens.

Sounds to me like there was concern with your traffic quality and complaints from the merchants on potential terms violations, so the network had to investigate. Could they ask these before they terminated? Sure.

It sounds like they gave him/her a chance to respond, Wade, but that they chose to refuse to answer their questions. :/

To reach out to an affiliate first doesn't seem to be LinkShare's style.
They got block on our private server somehow and never reached out first.
Just closed our account without notice back in May.

    Here.
