    RedEnvelope "Restructuring" Over Christmas Holiday
This email is to make you aware that that RedEnvelope is currently undergoing a restructuring. At this time, we are suspending the affiliate program for RedEnvelope.

You will not earn commissions on sales earned after Dec. 19, 2014, due to the restructuring.

    <snip>

We want to ensure our publisher partners are able to earn all qualified commission for sales that occur from December 1st - 19th. In order to do so, you will remain in your current program term through December 19th. On December 20th, you will automatically roll into a $0 commission program term until January 10, 2015 to maintain an active relationship. This will allow us to batch in any residual transactions in January.
Once I pull their links down, they ain't nevah goin' up agin.

More evidence of the fact that a significant percentage of merchants and the people in charge don't care a bit about their affiliates, to the point, seemingly, of going out of their way to inflict as much damage and pain as possible. Affiliates, be thankful for the good guys out there, but never assume that we're all on the same team.

This is one of the most outrageous lame excuses for screwing affiliates(and the network). What a crook!

They have a good site, good products. I am sure they convert well too. I tried getting into the pgm twice but got rejected. Tried getting in touch with their AM, never got a response back from them. It's always a red flag when you can't get ahold of the AM either as a prospective affiliate trying to join or as a joined affiliate.

The RedEnvelope brand is currently undergoing a restructuring. As part of this process, the affiliate program is being suspended. This was a difficult decision and we appreciate all of the efforts our affiliate partners have made in helping to promote the brand.

All affiliate partners were asked to remove their links and promotion of RedEnvelope by EOD 12/19/14. Affiliate links are not being deactivated immediately so that we retain the ability to process order inquiries and month-end reconciliation for Dec 1-19. Deactivating publisher relationships and links would prevent us from responding to order inquiries and processing month-end reconciliation. Again, all publishers were asked to remove links as we do not want our affiliate partners driving traffic to the site after they are unable to earn commission. The timeline for suspension of the affiliate program was included in the message sent to all publishers and is referenced below.

    Key Dates:
12/19/14: Links must be removed from your site
12/20/14: New program terms go into effect
    1/11/15: Program Suspended
Please reach out to me if you have any questions about this change.

Sorry, but this is a load of

First, there is no acceptable reason why this could not have waited until AFTER Q4 (or, if sooooooooooo important and vital to the company, done months earlier).

Second, for an "average" professional affiliate with several sites, to change out a major merchant's links will take months, not a couple of weeks (unless you ignore everything else for those couple of weeks). You'll continue to get the traffic despite what you say (SEE BOLD), for quite awhile, as affiliates struggle to change links, wasting time with more important tasks going undone.

Yup - Jeff DeBo and RedEnvelope should be ashamed.

They know exactly what they are doing to affiliates and it reeks. It will be a good topic to blog about and to use as an example the next time I am presenting at an affiliate function.

    Translation for newbies:
    1. Any links an affiliate (publisher) forgets or doesn't have time to pull down = free traffic/sales for merchant, $0 commission for affiliate
    2. Cached pages in a user's browser will continue to send traffic to RE. See #1
    3. Affiliates are deluged with emails during this period. It's easy to miss something like this. See #1
    4. Affiliates are too busy to attempt to delete and replace links for 3-4 weeks. So they'll just suck it up and send free traffic. See #1
    5. Big after Christmas sales = $0 for affiliate
    6. Christmas season is when many affiliates earn more $$$. Depriving affiliates of any commission for this period helps RE reduce the "cost" of this channel and reconcile their end-of-year accounting.

They're deactivating their program during the Christmas holiday, then stopping it afterwards (Suspension on Jan 11). The only thing they want to ensure is to steal whatever sales they can from their affiliates before they turn off the program.

I know there's a thread here somewhere that discusses the "cost" of an affiliate channel and how merchants use this (fairly or unfairly).

Sadly this happens quite often. And some Affiliate Managers like this case also come here to defend this action.

Those AMs who defend this kind of behavior, please close your eyes and imagine for a moment that things have changed and you have decided to become an affiliate. Now you are being asked to either find and replace all your links from multiple sites during a busy time or just pass free traffic to the vendor. How would you take it.

Yes, I have one simple question for you:

What kind of "restructuring" that RedEnvelope has to be done between 12/20 to 1/11 other than stealing commissions from affiliates for the busiest holiday season sales?

Reading through this it's probably not the affiliate managers fault but higher up the food chain. Even so, to do it at this time of year is unforgivable, especially with the poor notice period.

I wonder if it's anything to do with:

2008 - Provide Commerce acquire RedEnvelope
Jul 2014 FTD acquire Provide Commerce.

6 months lead time from an acquisition is about right for a structural change. That it coincides with a commercial sensitive time is poor timing, but I can see the chronology. Shame they didn't put this back until at least January 14th 2015.

Ah, just read more and RedEnvelope is not part of that acquisition by FTD Companies.
