... when it comes to deciding whether or not to work with a financial services company? Is it the bounty/percentage offered by the merchant(s)? Or perhaps the specific type of service, i.e. some services are shunned more than others? Or does how the affiliate manager represents the company affect your decision?

There are so many factors at play here:
Conversion rate - is the merchant well known and thus has a better chance to convert based on reputation? Does the site have a confirmed conversion rate? is the requested information comparable with other merchants?
Commission rate - is it competitive vs. others in the industry? Does it seem to fit the amount of information requested (i.e. higher payout for a 4-page form than a 2-page form)?
Services - Forex is not popular here. Other services can vary.
Affiliate Management - having a knowledgeable, responsive affiliate manager will definitely help with recruitment.
