    The Fine Art of Pre-Selling
I've just published an article that some of you may find useful:

"What is an affiliate marketer's job? What is the purpose of his/her website? Ask this question of many affiliates and you will get the answer: "Selling products."

And selling products is the job of affiliate marketers, right?

    Wrong....."

Nice, concise and right on a very important and key point.

But, I have to ask why you would choose Blogger for your platform? You are giving G the right to control and even censor your content.

What do other people think about using Blogger as a platform?

Yup, Phil is right in questioning that. Not sure how I missed that. You really should put YOUR stuff on a site that YOU control. It would be good to do that before you get further involved.

(If/when you make the change be sure to let me know so I can adjust the link in my article to your article.)

Bill, you're absolutely right. But I like to question conventional wisdom. Are there no advantages to using blogger as a platform?

The only advantage I see is that is it "ready to go." Doing it yourself means you have to take an hour or so to set it up.

    Also...PM on the way...

I'm still considering this. There are plenty of organizations that are happily using blogger for their business online presence, without apparent detriment to themselves.

It makes sense that Google will trawl and index its own blogging platform faster than other websites.

I like the simplicity of blogger - don't really want the clutter of a WordPress install for this project.

I might compromise and register a domain and point it to the blogger blog.

    We shall see.

I know the industry looks down on blogger, and there is the idea that if you don't have your own self-hosted domain you are not to be taken seriously. I'm not convinced that there is any real substance behind those views. Maybe it's just another form of prejudice?

"I'm not convinced that there is any real substance behind those views."

But, obviously, you know those views exist. If there was no "substance" they would not exist. If you "mask" the blogger URL by having your own domain - then it appears you are serious about your own business and not a part of The Google. In this world, perception, warranted or not, does have an impact.

Bill, I have to respectfully disagree with you here. There is normally a huge dichotomy between what people believe and real substance. Most people's belief systems are based on rumour and candyfloss. I'm only pushing the point because I believe passionately that this is a major issue holding the human race back.

Phil, perception is far from reality. Read Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

If everything was the same, I being an affiliate, wouldn't go with google just because they are anti affiliate. But that's just an emotional response, so may not hold water.

At a practical level, if I want to make some money off of my own blog google won't let me. And so would WordPress.com. The moment I want to monetize I will need to move to a self hosted blog. So it becomes a chicken and egg question. Do I spend money on domain and hosting now without knowing if I'll ever make a penny or do I wait till I know I can make some money and then move with all my content and my visitors to a self hosted blog.

Okay, I've registered a domain and pointed it to the blogger blog. That was an adventure. There is a mistake in Google's instructions which is really confusing. Bill, your link redirects correctly, you don't need to change anything. Here's an interesting thing: 205 views of the thread but only 13 people have looked at the article.

Ah, but I just did change it - to reflect "your" domain rather than that of The Goog.
