    For the most part it's Fear MARKETING - always a paid service to "help".

    Majority of websites fly under the radar - just not big enough for anyone to care about, much less notice.

    Your home page is just ONE page - majority of an algo's weight are to individual pages. Always laugh when I read someone putting so much effort in getting more links to their home page.

    Does Negative SEO happen? Sure. But most of us aren't worth the time and effort for a competitor to bother - no matter how automated the process can be. Monitor your traffic/log files, use an analytics program not tied into a third party, and disallow traffic from countries where known bad players are known to exist - and that includes the THOUSANDS of "SEO Experts" touting their wannabe services...
