From Website Magazine:
Negative SEO – Fact or Fear Tactic?
Is this as common a problem as they seem to say or is worrying about it generally a waste of valuable time?

For the most part it's Fear MARKETING - always a paid service to "help".
Majority of websites fly under the radar - just not big enough for anyone to care about, much less notice.
Your home page is just ONE page - majority of an algo's weight are to individual pages. Always laugh when I read someone putting so much effort in getting more links to their home page.
Does Negative SEO happen? Sure. But most of us aren't worth the time and effort for a competitor to bother - no matter how automated the process can be. Monitor your traffic/log files, use an analytics program not tied into a third party, and disallow traffic from countries where known bad players are known to exist - and that includes the THOUSANDS of "SEO Experts" touting their wannabe services...Salty kisses, Sandy toes, and a Pirate's heart...
