Do the amazon images cache locally on the hosted server after a search is performed? If so my img-cache is empty....Is this right?

The amazon-imgcache directory is used to cache product images if either: (1) the imageWH configuration is set to yes, or (2) the grid "if" option is used to sort products with images first, e.g.: grid=c:3,if

In (1), all the product image <IMG> tags will include WIDTH/HEIGHT attributes. To determine the product image's width/height, the script must fetch the image. The image is cached in amazon-imgcache to speed up repeat requests.

In (2), the script must determine which products have images. To determine this fact, the script fetches each product image to see if it is available. The image is cached in amazon-imgcache to speed up repeat requests.

If you do not do either (1) or (2), then the amazon-imgcache directory will remain empty. Note that the write permissions of the amazon-imgcache directory must be set (e.g.: chmod 775 or chmod 777) to enable the script to write to the amazon-imgcache directory.

Note: With amazon.pl generated results, the user's web browser always fetches product images from amazon.com's web server.

The imgCache.* configuration variables configure the image cache. The image cache is separate from the results cache since images change infrequently, if at all.
