    "New Predatory Advertising Discovery

Be Free has recently learned of a software program that is generating misleading affiliate traffic to some merchant sites. This software is called IPinsight. Be Free performed a thorough analysis and determined that it generates artificial affiliate traffic and credits sites associated with it for the sales made on the merchant’s site, whether the end user came through a valid affiliate link or not. This is a clear violation of the fair affiliate marketing practices outlined in our Code of Conduct.

It is very possible that you may have affiliates associated with this software in your own program.

IPinsight is bundled with a number of free software downloads and is ostensibly used to collect anonymous Internet user data (i.e. connection speeds, neighborhood-level geographic locations, etc.) which is then sold for targeted marketing purposes. This software resides on the end-user’s computer.

IPinsight occasionally opens a tiny invisible browser window while the end user is browsing on a merchant site. It is through that window that artificial affiliate impressions and click-throughs are generated. This can happen even if the end user’s navigation to the merchant’s site did not originate through a valid affiliate link. The effect of this is that an affiliate associated with IPinsight is credited for the purchases made by the end user. All of this occurs without the end user’s interaction, confirmation, or knowledge.

Affiliates associated with IPinsight will be disabled from all Be Free merchant programs by May 5th, 2003, unless the merchant gives us explicit authorization not to do that for their program."

Daniel Kaufman has created and led several companies over the past nine years.

In 1999, Kaufman co-founded and became CEO of Dash.com, an Internet software company that simplified online shopping for consumers (named Best Shopping Tool of 1999 by Time Digital) and enable advertisers to better target their online marketing efforts, even reaching customers while they visited competitors' web sites. Dash raised nearly $50 million in nine months in an attempt to stake out and lead its market segment. In fact, in less than two years, Dash succeeded in registering nearly 1.5 million consumers. Nevertheless, changes in the capital and Internet advertising markets in 2000 diminished the relative risk and reward prospects for Dash's business model which led to the decision to wind Dash down in June 2001 and return investors' funds.

I wonder if it is in any way related to WhenU.
Too many of these companies have to many of the same connections.
I am still awaiting WhenU to find a sneaky way to get back their Linkshare Merchants thru some back door.
Kudos to Befree for being on the ball!

CJ has been "aware" of them, no they are not related in any manner to WhenU ... but this is the largest Parasiteware "Cartel" out there ... (hint the old Dash @sswipes). There is information about them and their 15++ aliases that I posted LAST MONTH in the Private ParasiteWare(TM) forum as well as Merchant's only forum.

Yes, it is nice to finally hear of some positive action on CJ's part to prevent this type of activity, especially since they allowed the parasites to run rampant through the network unabated for a long time...

Great move there Todd as these guys even tried to pull the wool over your eyes and fly under the network radar.

By this statement does it mean that you know which merchants were affected by the parasites? Will you publish a list of the affected merchants?

eBates was dropped, yet they still list us.

See the initial disucssion: eBates removal

I have not been able to get a hold of them (no response). Trying to get link removed. Since I have no access to their servers.

The main point is that they have been removed from our program.

Clarification. When you say you will take appropriate action, does that mean you'll drop them?

My, my, isn't eBates considerate and responsive? So kind of them.

And they got along so well before they got caught with their hand in the "cookie" jar!

    Ironic, isn't it?

    Karl,

    Please accept my sincere apologies.

I get called Todd so many times on a daily basis (phone, face to face and e-mail) that I really wonder if I was supposed to be named Todd.

(The worst thing is that in an e-mail. I have a signature that says "Troy" and I still get "Hi Todd"... Go figure.)

Thanks for your reply. I'm shooting off some emails now to see if I was affected in anyway.

Yes, wtg hobbytron. I've never seen where ebates kept up a merchant site "and still listed a rebate" where the merchant had dropped them (which is why I asked).

I appreciate your stance and your strong commitment to no parasites.

    Thanks again!

    Troy,

Indeed kudos to you. Keep up the watch. As you can see they are persistant about sneaking in the back door

Todd (really Todd and not Troy),

Since you didn't respond to Karl, I'll ask again
