I have downloaded the Associate Engine demo and have been playing with it a little and I am very impressed at how easy it is to set up and use.

I know that AE is flexible and it's possible to show a handful or essentially all (besides beta stores) products from Amazon. So far, I've been playing with the full store (Basic) given as the AE default.

QUESTION(S): Is it possible to set up AE so that it does not display certain product categories? Just for the sake of discussion... can I remove the "Romance" category from Books so that particular category of books doesn't display on my site but all the rest still do?

I know that in theory one could build up a site from scratch using the AE scripts and start from Ground 0 and work their way up as to what products to include.

Since I'll probably want to display 99+% of what Amazon has to offer, I was hoping to work from the other direction... start with 100% and just trim out the specific categories that I'd rather not promote on my site.

Hope this makes sense. I'm a newbie to much of this and know in my mind what I want to ask, but not sure if it's coming across clearly.

    Thanks.

You can selectively delete categories from browse index pages using AE v4.11.23-beta. In ae.ini, define:

    browse.delete.NUMBER yes

where NUMBER is the browse node number (e.g.: NUMBER in type=browse&mode=NUMBER) of the browse node you want to delete.

    Excellent. Thanks David!

Hope you are able to look through your AE Key requests soon! I submitted a request for a 1 month trial AE key earlier today, and I am very eager to test this out further and see how it works with the proper links to Amazon. So far, everything looks great!

    Thanks again,

    Ed

    Hello David,

I downloaded the AE beta and tried the browse.delete.NUMBER yes command, and it worked great. Thanks.

Now I am wondering if it's possible to eliminate individual products from displaying on my site? If so, how do I do this?

For example, in magazines, I eliminated one category that was basically what I would consider porn. However, because of it's popularity, Playboy magazine still shows up in the Top Sellers listing at the top of the page. I am using the BASIC template.

I am putting together a "family friendly" web site and do not want to promote stuff like Playboy (and other items) - regardless of it's popularity and profit potential. Thanks.

    The Prude,

    Ed

    On a related note...

What would be the best way to not display an entire category like "magazines"?

    Using BASIC template.

    Thanks again,

    Ed

You can exclude products by ASIN by defining ASIN exclusion lists. See http://www.c3scripts.com/amazon/docs8.html#exclude.* Exclusion of products by keyword is not supported.

To make an entire store category go to amazon.com rather than being processed by AE, set browse.delete.STORECATEGORY (or browse.remote.STORECATEGORY) to yes, such as browse.delete.magazines to yes.

To remove a store from the template, edit the template.
